Michael Jackson: Honors and Memorials to the King of Pop
59
Time, CNN, BET, American Idol, Xbox Live, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and others, scrambled to honor King of Pop Michael Jackson. These are just a few events, but by no means all, in which entities paid homage or honored Michael Jackson in death.
US house of Representatives Moment of Silence. On Friday, Congressional Black Caucus members on organized a moment of silence on the House floor to honor Michael Jackson.
Xbox offers free Thriller video. In memory of the recent passing of the King of Pop, Xbox allowed fans to download the Thriller music video from the Xbox Live Video Marketplace for free over the weekend. Nine Jackson videos appear on the site, which could be downloaded for 160 Microsoft Points each.
American Idol Season 8 Encore Presentation. On Monday, American Idol rebroadcast its Michael Jackson Night from Season 8. It was a night of great performances, featuring Idol winner Kris Allen performing an acoustic Remember the Time, while Adam Lambert reinterpreted Black or White. You can still see these performances on YouTube or the Idol site.
BET. The awards show scrambled to honor Michael Jackson Sunday June 28th, and their hastiness really showed. I personally found the show in which artists paid fashion homage to Michael, dedicated their awards to him, and sang a couple tunes somewhat boring. Janet Jackson gave a brief, yet heart-wrenching speech about her family’s loss as her father, Joe Jackson peered on from the crowd.
Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame. At their Rock and Soul music festival in Ohio on Sunday, organizers paid tribute to Michael. They also scheduled a special video tribute in their fourth floor theater, and set up memorial space in their lobby.
Blue Water Productions. The company plans to release a comic book in October, entitled Tribute: Michael Jackson, King of Pop. You can already preorder the comic book.
CNN. According to CNN, the world ended when Michael went to the hospital, and it finally began again sometime on the Sabbath day—so much for keeping it holy. I actually deeply appreciated CNN’s wall-to-wall coverage of Michael Jackson’s death, which lasted from Thursday June 25, through as Sunday, the 28th. I had thought it was the Michael Jackson channel until I turned it on Sunday to see other news for the first time in days. Someone at CNN must have been a huge fan because they stationed reporters at the hospital and Michael’s house all weekend, they featured Michael on Larry King, and they did a special devoted to him. Among other things, they were reportedly the only news team covering BET’s red carpet in honor of Michael Jackson on Sunday. CNN was joined in continuous coverage by E!, Fox News, and MNBC.

Time Magazine. On Newsstands is a commemorative issue of Time Magazine completely devoted to Michael Jackson. The editions tells Michael’s story in time segments called: The prodigy, The Superstar, The Jacko, The Music.
The New York Times has a nice interactive global map showing comments and reactions from readers in different countries.
New York City Council. In a rude turn of events, when a request for a moment of silence hit the floor of a council meeting, some members walked out. Staten Island's James Oddo confirmed to Azi Paybarah that he walked out in response to the tribute. His fellow Staten Islanders Erich Ulrich and Vinny Ignizio also left, though Ulrich said he just wanted to talk to Oddo. Lew Fidler said he left because Jackson "was probably a serial pedophile, may have well died of a drug overdose." Peter Vallone Jr. said he was "looking for a cup of coffee" and winked.
U2. When U2 kicked off its first tour in three years in Barcelona, they paid tribute to Jackson with their Billie Holiday cover of Angel of Harlem.
Fans. Michael Jackson fans also pay homage to their star by placing flowers on his Hollywood Walk of Fame Star, outside theaters, and his house. The internet is painted with beautiful pictures that fans have designed on their computers.

Yeah, I wish it could be that way. I'd like them to stay with Katherine; however, she's going to need some help. she's in her golden years. 3 kids is a lot of work.
