Michael Torpey, a trained operatic tenor and classical vocalist, has been singing professionally throughout the country for many years.
Born and raised in the shadow of New York City, Michael, a cousin of the writer, has performed with the Purchase, N.Y., symphony orchestra, where he had principal roles as Tamino in "Die Zauberflote," Eisenstein in "Die Fledermaus," and Don Attavio in "Don Giovanni."
Under the batons of Maestro Kurt Masur and Vincent La Selvam, Michael has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the New York Grand Opera at such venues as Carnegie Hall and Madison Square Garden. He studied under Jacques Trussel at the Suny Purchase Conservatory of Music.
Mr. Torpey has performed as a guest artist at the Bellagio and Paris hotels in Las Vegas, Nev., as well as on the Royal Caribbean, Carnival and Princess cruise lines.
Michael is the tenor soloist at Mt. Kisco Presbyterian Church . He made his debut performance with the Opera Company of the Highlands, and appeared as a solo vocalist on Joe Franklin's Memory Lane radio program from New York City.
In his extensive chamber, recital and concert work, Mr. Torpey has shared the stage with many extraordinary talents, including Dawn Upshaw, Thomas Hampson, Jacque Trussel, Bradley Brookshire, Anthony Newman and Mary-Jane Newman. In addition, he performed in the world premiere of Anthony Newman's National Hymn and Lee Hoiby's "For You O Democracy."
A versatile singer and actor, Mr. Torpey's credits in musical and dramatic theater include Laser Wolf in "Fiddler on the Roof," Val in "Babes in Arms," the Cowardly Lion in the "Wizard of Oz," the Tin Man in "The Wiz," Harold Hill in "The Music Man," Charlie Dalrymple in "Brigadoon," Jonathan in "Arsenic and Old Lace," Grampa Martin Vanderhof in "You Can't Take It With You," Audry II in "Little Shop of Horrors" and Fegin in "Oliver."
Mr. Torpey has appeared as Eisenstein in the Opera Company of the Highlands' production of "Die Fledermaus," The Mohonk Mountain Resort, and Broadway Concerts Direct production of "Simple Gifts" with Sarah Rice (The original Joanna) in the Broadway production of "Sweeney Todd."
Most recently, Mr. Torpey appeared as Ravenal in the Opera Company of the Highlands' production of "Show Boat" and as their stage and technical director for "Amahl and the Night Visitors" in addition to his roles as lead tenor soloist and instructor at Mt. Kisco Presbyterian Church.

- Review: Lexington Singers' inspired concertLexington Herald-Leader3 days ago
By pairing James Achambeault’s images with Johnie Dean’s sumptuous arrangement and the musicians’ sensitive performance, the Lexington Singers have created an iconic Kentucky work that ought to be committed to video and packaged as something choral groups around the Commonwealth can present.

Thanks, Ralph. He's a talented guy, but since he's my cousin I'll just let his great voice "speak" for itself!
Right on Bill.......He is GOOD !!! However I'm like you , I like Bing Crosby's music. (Now everyone reading my comments won't know what I'm talking about , I guess you'd say it's an insider between you and me...LOL)
Your cousin!! cool, this is such a classic song and i love hearing the many different variations including Michaels, and im glad you have managed to sort out adding capsules to your hubs;)
This song is the most popular song choice for funerals here in the UK..
I'm glad you liked it, compu-smart. Thanks to you I've been able to put pictures and videos on some of my hubs. The procedure is still murky to me, but at least I've had some success. I lost the first few seconds of the video somehow, but I'm a little reluctant to try to replace it with a new, complete version -- but it's not bad because Michael's picture appears when you open the hub. I didn't know the song was popular for funerals. Thanks, again, for all your help.
No problem, William, you will soon be a Hubpage veteran in no time and I'm always happy to help out when and where ever i can;)
WOW Bill, this Michael Torpey guy has a real stong set of cords. Pay no mind to the fact that, he happens to be my son and you're my cousin. GOOD! is GOOD!
That's what I call objective, Johnny. When a guy's good, he's good -- even if he is your son or your cousin. By the way, does Michael have a new website?
Beautiful voice
Thanks, vrajavala. We think so, too.
Always wionderful to hear such a good voice! I will return again and again to hear it.
Patty
I'm glad you like my cousin's voice, Patty. I'm a little prejudiced, but I listen to his video often -- mixed in with a few of Bing Crosby's videos.
Your cousin is very, very good William!!!
I am very impressed!!
Thank you for pointing this hub out kind sir!!
Thanks, Froggy. I just found your comment, sorry I'm late. I'm very proud of Michael. I only wish more people could hear him sing.
