Useful information on the Michigan labor market. It's good to see that some jobs have been growing in Michigan. The state's economy is in sad shape, thanks to the decline of the Big Three car companies.

What you say is very true, Ralph. One friend of mine is a successful restaurant manager with a well known casual dining chain in the greater Detroit area. They are expanding. Another friend works in the fitness industry and recently hired more managers for expanding facilities. I hope green industries continue to expand and help Michiagan. Upstate Michigan is beautiful, epseically form Gaylord on up to Mackinack Island. The large wind turbines there struck me speechless.

This is great information and a sigh of relief for Michiganders. If only you would do the media reports and speak on this note of positive thinking, it would help out a ton of people. As a Michigander myself, it gets frustrating to hear how bad the economy is. Yet, when you look around and pay attention to what's actually going on many business are still opening, many new developments are still under construction, the malls stay packed with tons of shoppers and many new homes are building. So, it must not be too bad. It's unfortunate that the media attempts to discourage the masses and in many cases win.

By the way, you have an awesome profile. I would hate to get into a fight with you, though. Smile!

Gift Guru - welcome to my pages and thanks for making such pertinent comments. We have to dig in and be organized about job seeking these days. Media hype does not help. Workforce development counselors can help.

(haha - note: the more I train, the less I feel like fighting, but the better I could if needed. :)

Peace and best regards!

One of the most visible booms in the Detroit metropolitan area is nursing homes and assisted living facilities. They are popping up like mushrooms in nearly every suburb. Another is gambling casinos. Unfortunately, another is a proliferation of strip bars and massage parlors.

I just visited a couple of weeks ago -- All along I-75 from Toledo to Lake Huron, I found many jobs available in an assortment of occupational fields. Visiting several libararies and county job offices along the way, I found Michigan job listings very strong in mumbers. Bay City even had a few dozen of jobs. Not so much in Flint, but many in Ann Arbor. I have a martial art instructor in my group in Michigan and his businesses are growing in mid-Michigan and Detroit areas.

Depends on the region in Michgian, I'm sure...

I need to update this Hub soon, as the numbers for 2016 and 2018 projections are already out for certain industry sectors and regions of America. Healthcare realted jobs should not decline, but increase ---That's because Generation X is only about 55+% as large as the Boomers, and the Millennials (Gen Y) are nearly as large a cohort as the Boomers, so there is going to be a shortage in nurses, other practitionsers, and allied health professions for many decades.

Interestingly enough, there is no mention of nursing as a top career in michigan, yet we keep hearing about how desperate the need for them is. Curious to know why that is...

Patty Inglish, MS profile image

Patty Inglish, MS  says:

I also want to know that. As of tonight, August 7, there are listings for 3,510 nursing positions of all kinds in Michigan. I think that's not a large number for an entire state and growth in that field began a downhill trend in January.

someonewhoknows profile image

someonewhoknows  says:

The way I hear it they are trying to get the current nursing staff to do more rather than hiring more nurses.

My concern is most jobs around me are at least 25 miles away from me at the moment.I'm concerned about gas prices going up again and car repair costs.

Patty Inglish, MS profile image

Patty Inglish, MS  says:

Someone - same was tried in Ohio in the late 1980s. They wanted to get rid of nurses' aides and have the LPNs do that too. Then the RNs were to work fewer people per shift and longer hours. It did not work.

Gas prices are climbing again and people cannot get to these jobs so far away and bus service is not good enough. It's a bad predicament.

Hi Patti,

I noticed that you do not have Kuyper College on your list which is a small Chrisitan college in Grand Rapids and you do not have University of Phoenix either. UOP is located in Grand Rapids, Lansing, Portage, Flint and there are 6 metro Detroit Locations as well.

What's your experience with University of Phoenix for a good recommendation? Are their instructional staffs of equal quality across the nation? Are classroom and oline opffereings both high quality across the nation? Thanks for any additional info.
