Mexico is the first country to go public with its use of the microchip for law-enforcement purpose.

From Christian Monitor

The Mexican officials have been injected with a microchip the size of a grain of rice. Implanted beneath the skin of their arms, it allows them to access a high-level crime database and, they hope, track them if they're kidnapped.

Crime - and how to fight it - has long been a challenge here. Kidnapping is spreading, reaching beyond traditional wealthy targets to the middle class. And in a country where only a quarter of all crimes are reported because of fear that bribed cops will expose informants, securing access to sensitive documents has become a priority.

The chip comes from VeriChip, a subsidiary of Applied Digital Solutions of Palm Beach, Fla. The device is nonremovable (though it can be deactivated) and is slipped under the skin in seconds via a syringe-like device. The chip costs $200, plus $50 a year, in addition to the scanner and software. The technology has existed for years and was originally developed to let pet owners identify stray animals.

The chip sits dormant under the skin and is only "awakened" by a scanner using radio- frequency identification, or RFID. The scanner emits a signal that powers the chip, allowing it to send its identification number. Then, depending on the configuration of the database that is hooked up to the scanner, a door is opened or a database unlocked, the way an ID card allows employees into the office.

Mexico is the first country to go public with its use of the microchip for law-enforcement purposes, says Keith Bolton, president of VeriChip. Mr. Bolton considers the chip the "future of high-tech security" and says that Mexico is sending a message around the world that in certain areas there's a need to reach out to new technology.

VeriChip executives became inspired to use the device on humans after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, when they saw firefighters heading into the twin towers ID-ing themselves by writing on their arms with magic marker.

"We then realized that our chip was also a product for the human market," Bolton says.

It has started... Thanks for writing about this, just had a long conversation about the uses that could be had from technology like this and how it could be the end result to the REAL ID ~ Sorry but to me that is a scary thought - having my children or grandchildren implanted. Stuff out of a science fiction movie...

Don't worry your children won't realize that's it's for tracking them: they will be educated to believe that's it's for their good :)

In France we have ID card since long and the new generation of young people seem now to be ready to accept to be microchipped so you see it's just about people being accustomed and they will stay "happy" ;)

Ahhh too late for them not to realize, as I am already educating the younger set, 4,9,12 of the freedoms that could be lost; and my older set of children 20, 25, 27 already work to help to educate those closest to themselves. What is odd is that the general populace doesnt' realize the full impact of any of many events that are occurring world wide. For all the resources available in this day and age, you would think they would make more informed decisions and not be "trained" in thought and action. Sad! I am glad to have found a person like you that does see things through a wider lens, with full exposure - quite refreshing! Me thinks that you must have been raised in the "old school" ;)

"old school" that's it and that's the argument of those who will promote microchips as "progressive" and as people do want to be progressive and not old school you see old school won't win :)

Yes most definitely a valid argument “if” that particular terminology is used. Progression is good, I wholeheartedly agree; and in fact teach this also. However, what happens to a child that innately desires to “grow” and it’s freedoms are progressively restricted in a continuous fashion? This child learns; rebellion, conformity, or it dies; maybe not physically, but mentally.

My hope lies in the fact that it is never too late to heighten in the younger generation the happiness that emanates from the true realization of freedom and choice. However we came to be on this earth, that understanding is deep rooted in our make-up. It is a fail safe to help the human race survive. What is unfortunate is that there are those that believe that in order for them to survive, they must control – everything and everyone. Hence the clashes we have seen throughout history. It takes a lot to push a soul to that point, but that point does come – eventually.

You are a smart one ~ love that!
