Microsoft Zune: 4 Things You Should Think About Before You Purchase Your Microsoft Zune

Should you buy the Microsoft Zune? There I was sitting in the aisle of mp3 players. I couldn't make up my mind on which one I wanted. Should I go with a Microsoft Zune 30gig? Or Maybe a 60gig? Still undecided I walked to the counter to find a sales associate. I said to him "Hey in your opinion would you get a Zune or a Creative Zen?" He tells me...."Ummm I dunno" Which kinda got me upset that he wasn't offering me any advice. My mind made up I went on to purchase the Zune.

While I hope you don't have to go thru what I had went thru. Here are some things that you should take into consideration before you purchase your Microsoft Zune.

"Which Zune should I get 30 gig or the 60 gig"...As much as I love mp3 players you know that the player is just a player and its not going to take over your desktop or laptop music library.

"I like the Black Zune over the Brown Zune"...That's nice and all but do you really pay attention to the color other than when you decide to buy. Shop around and go with your instincts if all else fail the cases or skins are available and will give your Zune a instant makeover.

The radio feature is pretty cool to. Not only are you able to listen to your favorite station, depending on the station it will even list the artist and the artist song currently playing.

Another great thing I like is the fact that it has a larger screen than other competing mp3 players. Can you imagine yourself sitting on a exercise bike or elliptical machine watching a movie instead of constantly looking at the time wanting the workout to be over.

These are just a few of the things you should consider. There will always be a debate on which mp3 player is better but should we really care? I mean not like we're getting paid for any of the sales. If your feeling like treating your self to a Microsoft Zune...Go for it.

5 Common Microsoft Zune How To Questions

The following are not the top questions I have seen about the Zune by any means but they are common questions that I have found. They were certainly questions that I had at one point so I thought I would lay them out here with my own answers.

  • How To Load Zune Firmware Update: To avoid problems during the firmware upgrade make sure of the following:

    1. You have the latest version of the Zune software on your PC.
    2. Your battery is fully charged.
    3. Your Zune is connected to one of the main USB ports on your computer (not a front one or via a USB hub).

To get the latest Zune software for your PC you can get a fresh copy from the official Zune site or just upgrade the software installed on your PC if it's already there. To do that, click 'Settings', 'software', 'GENERAL', 'CHECK FOR UPDATES'.

Once the above criteria is met you will ensure a smooth firmware upgrade. In most cases, plugging your Zune in will check the Internet to see if an upgrade to the firmware is available. To do it manually: click 'Settings', 'device', 'Device Update'. You should be good to go!

  • How To Put DVDs Onto A Zune: Putting DVDs on your Zune is quite easy. It does, however, require 3rd party software so that you can convert the movie to a format that the Zune supports. There are plenty of applications available to help with the conversion. Some are much better than the others. Believe me, I tried them all. You can accomplish this task easily and in very few steps with the right package and have fantastic quality output. This is something that I do a lot of, putting home videos that I have on DVD onto my Zune, as well as making 'backups' of my DVD movies. The resource box below points you to some resources for the top DVD to Zune converters.
  • How Do I Download Videos To A Zune: Similar to transferring DVDs over to the Zune, you will likely need 3rd party software to convert the videos into a format that the Zune supports. Some videos are already in the correct format and you just need to sync them over but if you are unable to and they will not play, they will likely need to be converted. It's a quick process and with the right software you can convert several files at once easily making them ready to play on your Zune. The software is very inexpensive and even cheaper when you buy the suite which allows the conversion of both DVDs and videos in one package. Not all software will do both though and like the DVD converters, not all video converters (or suites) are created equal. Check the resource box below for a link to reviews of the best 3 software packages available.
  • How To Delete On Zune: Your files will (or should) always exist in two locations; your PC and on the Zune device. Through the Zune software on your computer you can easily remove any of the media from your computer and/or your Zune. Here's how: From the Zune software, click 'Collections', then choose the collection that contains the item you want to remove. Your choices should be: Music, Playlists, Videos, Pictures, and Podcasts. Right-click the item you want to delete and click 'Delete' and then you will be given the option of where the item is to be deleted from...the Zune, the computer or both. It's that simple.
  • How To Reset A Zune: The Zune will lock up on occasion so resetting it is often a necessary task. Before resetting the Zune though make sure the Hold switch is off. Flick it on and off to be double sure. If it still needs resetting, hold the back and up buttons at the same time for a few seconds and the screen should turn black and then start to reboot. Some minor settings may (but not likely) be lost but your files will still be in tact.

I hope that you found this mini knowledge base useful. Enjoy your Zune.

About me: I am what you might call a Microsofty. I love all of Microsoft's products and I was ecstatic when the Zune hit the market and have learned a ton about it since. One of the first things that I wanted to do was get my DVDs and video collection onto it. I tried a bunch of Zune movie conversion software and designed a site around the top 3. For reviews on the best DVD to Zune converters and Video to Zune conversion software head over to ZuneMovieConverters.com.
