Microtech Knives--Quick History

I promise, this history will be short. After that, we can get into the real topic--awesome knives. Microtech Knives Inc. was started in 1994 with one goal in mind--to produce the best possible knives. They have succeeded. They want each customer to receive the best possible knife for their money. Nearly everyone who has ever owned a Microtech would agree, they have made this goal a reality.

Microtech Knives does this by focusing on the following things:

  1. Close Tolerances (they have, what I feel, are the best tolerances in the industry).
  2. They only use USA manufactured parts, materials and labor.
  3. The use the best grade of tool steels, aircraft alloys and components (once again, all developed and manufactured in the USA)
  4. They produce nearly 95% of their own parts, which means they control nearly every production step of not only the knife but the component parts as well.
  5. They have a limited life time warranty on all their products
  6. Finally, they do not compromise quality--EVER.

Microtech has one of, if not the best, reputations in the knife industry.  Although they make a variety of knives, including fixed blade and out the front, they are best known for their OTF (out the front) knives.  Microtech OTF knives are known worldwide for their high quality, realiability, and their sleek looks.  They don't cut any corners and as soon as you pick up your first Microtech knife, you will know this is true.

Microtech Ultratech

Ultratech, Red. This was the special production color for 2008.

Microtech Makora II

The Makora II is the largest production knife currently manufactured in the USA. The blade is nearly 4.5" long. Made of D2 steel because of the high carbon content, the blade has everything you want; strength, durability, and the ability to stay sharp longer. The action on the Makora II is incredibly fast. And, like all of the Microtech knives, the blade locks up unbelievably tight. There is no wiggle in the knife.

The handle is made T6-6061 aircraft aluminum. This means the handle frame is strong, durable and can take almost anything you can throw at it. The base model (MT106-1) comes with carbon fiber inserts which not only look great but add strength to the handle. The base of the handle has a glass breaker and a pocket clip.

The double action slide button opens and closes the knife. It is stiff. If there is one complaint about this knife, it is that the button is a little too stiff. I rate the Makora II at a 10 out of 10. If you want a big, high quality, out the front knife, the Makora II is the knife for you.

Microtech Ultratech

The Ultratech is the flagship line of knives from Microtech.  Their original out the front knife, this has set the standard for OTF's ever since.  A dual action knife (which means the slide trigger opens and closes the knife) the knife has been designed so that the spring remains "at rest" at all times except when it is deployed.  This ingenious development means the spring does not become fatigued and assures the user that the knife will fire consistently and powerfully.  The Ultratech comes in a bunch of different variations.  Whichever variation is your favorite, the Ultratech is a must have for any OTF knife aficionado.

Combat Troodon "Wounding Tooth"

The Troodon (TROH-o-don) was named after a dinosaur.  The name is Greek for "wounding tooth".  This fantastic OTF knife has a slender handle which is contoured. This knife has all the classic feel of a Microtech knife but is specially designed for combat.  The project was spear headed by Anthony Marfione, the founder of Microtech knives.  The Troodon has extremely sophisticated internal mechanisms which make it even more functional and reliable.

Microtech Currahee

The Currahee is a full tang fixed blade designed for the US Special Forces Boat Team 20.  After a bunch of serious field testing, the Currahee earned its stripes in the field.  Currahee is a Cherokee name which translates as "Stands alone".  Currahee also is the name of the last mountain in the Blue Ridge mountains where the US Army had Camp Toccoa during WWII.  This is where the first Parachute infantry troops trained.  Microtech says, " This knife far surpassed all expectations, and therefore, we gave it the name 'Currahee'".  If you are looking for a great survival knife or combat knife, this is one you definitely need to look into.  This serious fixed blade knife for the customer who wants a high quality and long lasting survival knife.

A very nice Chef's knife would be great--would it need to be out the front?
