Please note that I am not in any way, shape or form medically educated. I write from experience, I may even be missing information. If you should agree or disagree with me please comment. This is my first hub & I am always up for listening to other's opinions. This also includes my remedies, they are only from past trial and error they were not medically recommended to me.
What is a migraine?
Blood vessels and nerves around the brain and scalp. Usally causing throbbing pain on one-side of the head /eye or both.
Migraine vs. Bad Headache
You could be having the worst headache of your life. That's just it, it's a headache not a migraine. If your experiencing a migraine then your symptoms consists........nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, sensitivity to any brightness of light, sound or smell & any kind of movement will intensify the pulsating pain in your head, eyes & sometimes even your neck!
When migraines attack
Some people receive warnings & others don't.
The warnings include:
- a twitch in either eye
- blurred vision
- numbness in an arm or leg
- a dull pain in one spot or all of the head
- a dull pain in the neck
Causes & Prevention
A headache or migraine are usually experienced due to a change in the body. It is the way your brain is letting you know that something just isn't right.
Causes include: not enough sleep, hunger, PMS, stress, allergies, sinuses, change in weather, muscle/joint aches & pains.
Try limiting the following to prevent a migraine: alcohol, caffeine, television, chocolate, aspirin, to much sleep, dairy products, sodium, sugar.
- Note-caffeine,chocolate & sweets will relieve the pain also during a migraine.
Relief you can try
- Grab a tube sock, place 2 tennis balls inside it & tie a knot. Now lie on it with the two bony protrusions that stick out slightly at the base of the neck and skull which is called the occipital bone. Do this for at least 20 minutes.
- Soak a washcloth in water, ring it out, just enough not to drip anymore, then put in freezer for about 10 mins, now straighten it out and put over your eyes and forehead.
- You can also take a dish towel or bigger and follow steps for washcloth. Except when you take out of freezer roll it up and wrap around your neck, now lye back and enjoy!
- Put a frozen package of veggies on your neck/forehead.
- Drink a cup of coffee or have a glass of soda.
- Have a candy bar or something sweet.
- Cut a potato in half, put the white side on your forehead.Tie a handkerchief around your forehead to hold the potato in place. Now lye in a dark, quite room for about a half an hr.
- Fill an empty water bottle with Luke to warm/hot water and put it on the pulsating pain. You can also freeze the water bottle with water in it and have a cold compress on the pain.
My advice to all headache/migraine sufferers
Try keeping a journal & record information. Remember what you ate different that day, or if you had more stress than usual, what brand of medicine you took for it & if that medicine worked or not. Make sure you write this down as soon as you think of it. The idea is to log as much info as you can. Hopefully in time this will give you an idea of what triggers your headache/migraine & maybe you can finally start getting some relief.
