A Closer Look at Mike Dillard's Business Building Suggestions

Mike Dillard News & Events--

No question, Mike Dillard is a fantastic copywriter; or, he hires great copywriters (either way he's good at it).

Dillard's books like Magnetic Sponsoring and now Building on a Budget aren't just informative, they're also inspiring.

They make you want to take action in your Network Marketing Business to seize new and better opportunities made available by the Internet.

Building on a Budget vs. Magnetic Sponsoring...

Mike Dillard's first book, Magnetic Sponsoring, introduced the concepts of attraction marketing and the funded-sponsoring proposal, and focused a great deal on using Google Adwords to generate leads.

In his new book, Building on a Budget, Dillard introduces network marketers to low and no cost Social Marketing strategies to generate their own prospects and leads.

Below is a list of these 5 areas Mike Dillard talks about in his book. I'll discuss some problems you'll want to avoid when getting started.

We'll also go over some issues to consider before jumping into a particular strategy.

By being aware of these issues you can accomplish a lot more with less effort in this new attraction model.

First, the Five Strategies Dillard Covers in 'Building On a Budget':

  1. Squidoo (similar to Hub Pages, which is where you are now)
  2. Using Blogs to Build on a Budget
  3. Craiglist
  4. Video Sharing -- Ex. Book Review
  5. Press Releases

Building on a Budget also describes the funded proposal, discussing much like he did in Magnetic Sponsoring how you can use "cash-flow producing strategies" to support you in business while generating your prospects list at the same time.

Problems to be Aware of If you Implement "Building on a Budget"...

Mike Dillard shares how you can use Squidoo, which is a site much like Hub Pages, to put up content and attract prospects.

The problem...

The problem is that most of Mike Dillard's audience are all marketing the same things. He doesn't stress the importance of finding unique 'niche' key words to avoid competing for the same things with a large group who just read his book as well.

If everyone goes to Squidoo and targets the same key words two things can happen.

1. Google and Yahoo see the trend so they penalize everyone using the same types of key words.

2. You are competing with so many people for the same word you never get a good ranking.

The solution to this is to create a unique strategy and to focus on key word phrases that are less competitive. Then as you create more and more content you start to get recognized by the search engines as a contributor. When you reach that stage you can then start to go for the more competitive key words and you'll be rewarded.

The other solution is to broaden your marketing beyond Squidoo at other 'content sharing' locations .

Hub Pages is also a great way to build an audience and generate traffic.

Just be sure to provide value to the community first--and promote yourself second. That's what makes 'attraction marketing' effective. Without giving value first, you'll shun your audience instead of building one.

Real Issues to Consider with Craigslist...

Craigslist.org is one of the suggested locations by Building on a Budget to start building your leads list. It's a place you can post free advertisements that can then lead people to a lead capture page.

Craigslist is a good tip, but keep this in mind...

1. Craiglist was built for people to post local classified ads--not to promote affiliate products or business opportunities, etc. Craigslist is working harder and harder to minimize or even eliminate this marketing tactic because they see it as spam. I don't personally use Craigslist in my own marketing for this reason.

2. Craigslist will take up a lot of your time (just as much as any other social marketing method like Blogging or anything else), but it will NOT provide the same long-term advantages as many other options available.

3. There is little opportunity to 'pre-build' a relationship with your prospects on Craiglist. You just have a short ad. You could send them into your blog or elsewhere but few will use it for this purpose. Other social marketing methods provide more leverage by introducing your prospects to you before they ever get on your list. This means they are more likely to buy from you and are far better prospects.

4. Another challenge with Craiglist is that you could spend a lot of time figuring out how to generate a lot of leads out of it (working through the hassle of finding a trust-worth person or company to hire to post all of your ads for you, as the book suggests, etc); however, over time it is very likely that Craigslist could come down on all the marketers filling up their system with MLM offers.

Even if you employ the lessons taught in Mike Dillard's Magnetic Sponsoring and Building on a Budget books, most will not and they will spam. This could lead to Craigslist making it more difficult to systematically post such content and thus, you are vulnerable to losing your stream of leads. Other social marketing methods can change as well, but are less vulnerable and offer far more advantages in building up a residual growing stream of leads over time.

Building on a Budget & Social Marketing Intro...

Building on a Budget does an excellent job at introducing people to lead generation through social media.

Why Do I Recommend Mike Dillard's book, Building on a Budget?

The reality is that most network marketers still don't realize how much more profitable their business would be if they implemented a funded-sponsoring proposal for much needed cash-flow, while generating their own leads at no or low cost over the Internet. They also don't know where to start. For this reason I suggest everyone reads this book, Building on a Budget.

I did read the book on you suggestion, I felt it just scratched the surface. Having started with Renegade University, before I read the book I found my self looking for more information. However I feel the book does give key info, it falls short on the how to. Having a trainer and coach click by click showing me the "how to" is far more beneficial. I have traveled miles in just one month with your methods. Thanks, I will be adding my Hub page tomorrow.

Interesting Hub. I have read Building on a Budget. I agree that MLM'ers need to expand there marketing strategies to include "Attraction Marketing" using the internet. One thing I did not like about his material was that he talks a lot about what to do, but does not go into enough detail about how to do it. Great job!

Great and Useful Post.

I had the concerns that stevemark provided the answer to.

Vitually nobody needs another "How to.." book that only tells "what" without the actual "how."

If I spend any money at this point, I want it to be for specific application instructions to bust the learning curve.

Everyone already is posting and blogging everywhere about the Web 2.0 and the "what to do."

It is misleading to devise a sales page promising "how" and only regurgitating "what."

Even if the info is generally good, it is worthless if I have 10 tons of the same info already.

Mike Dillard did not go from "waiter to 7 figures in 18 months" by applying general info. He should not provide and charge for general info when promising his exact blueprint.

I am glad that I did not buy.

Better to invest in Tim Sales, of mlmbrilliance, or Dani Johnson, of workathomeprofitzone

These are a lot better professional websites and packaged information.

Hi Mike,

Great HUB! I was wondering what the differences between Magnetic Sponsoring and Building on a Budget was and you clarified perfectly. The other question was how much it (or they for that matter) went beyond what to do as opposed to how to accomplish them.

Jim Hickey

PS - Rengade U. - Professional does a fantastic job on the "HOW TO" accomplish so much relative to establishing a presence on the web.

Nice hub. But, I don't know the connection of being number 1 to making money. For 3 weeks now my blog promoting MPG-Caps/Crumbs was in number 1 position in google search. It drops to number 2 today when I post last night something about it in scam.com. But, what I'm saying here is that during that 3 weeks of being number 1 and even up to now not a single cent goes to my account. Because nobody clicks ads on my website. So, being number 1 in Google is not an assurance that you'll earn. Much more if your visitors are bloggers because bloggers don't click ads. I'd like to share this to all, The Difference between Professional Marketers and Bloggers Please read, here's the link http://makemoneyforbeginners.blogspot.com

Thanks for the introduction to Hub Pages!

I loved Building on a Budget and it was well worth the tiny investment. The only section I found a little to heavy going and decided not to apply was the Craigslist.

Thanks for all you do

Hey Mike,

At the time, I was swept under by the social buzz and amore of Building on a Budget. For I had read Magnetic Sponsoring, and Building on a Budget seemed the next progression for putting Magnetic Sponsoring principles into place.

I bought the book and read it cover to cover in an afternoon laying on the couch. I took copious notes and make an outline for implementation.

Indeed, I was inspired.

But I have to admit, that next day when I sat down at the computer to begin building my empire I was like a lost boy in a big city.

I didn't know which direction to turn, didn't know where to begin and here's the biggest thing, I didn't have a clue HOW.

Building on a Budget told me WHAT to do, but it's the HOW part that I see so many people getting hung up on. I know I was hung up like a pair of running shoes dangling over a telephone wire.

So although I DO recommend Building on a Budget, I also think it's imperative that people get your Renegade University (upgrade to Professional) to accompany it.

It just makes sense because Renegade Professional offers the click by click visual tutorials that explain HOW to set up the WHAT that Mike Dillard so eloquently writes about in Building on a Budget.

Nice Hub, hard to believe this is what got you started some 15 months ago. Congrats on all your success.

Please keep the seat next to you warm at the top, I have my climbing shoes on and moving at a steady pace now.
