Mike Tyson
Who is Mike Tyson?
Mike Tyson is an american heavyweight boxer born Michael Gerard Tyson on June 20th 1966 in Brooklyn, New York. He is also one of the most controversial people in america.
Troubled Childhood
Deep in the Brownsville,Brooklyn burrough of New York Michael Tyson would be born. He would be raised in the harsh environments of Brownsville and Bedford-Stuyvesant alongside his brother and sister raised by a single mother after Tyson's father left when he was only two years old. As a young teen, Tyson would have a troubled youth being arrested 38 times at age 13. He was then sent to a reform school, it was at this school he was discovered by his future trainers Cus D'Amato and Kevin Rooney. At 16, his mother would die, putting him in custody of his boxing trainer D'Amato.
Amateur Career
Tyson was a great amateur boxer, nearly being in the Olympics before his two defeats by Henry Tillman. He would win the the heavyweight champion National Golden Gloves although.
Professional Career
A year after his National Golden Gloves championship, he would turn professional. in his His first two years tyson would win 28 matches, with 26 of his wins by way of knock out. His trainer D'Amato would then die at this time, and his training duties were succeeded completely by Kevin Rooney. His first title would be the WBC heavyweight champion against Trevor Berbick. With Trevor's TKO in the second round, Tyson would become the world's youngest heavyweight champion ever.
The Three Heavyweight Belts
A couple months after his defeat of Berick, he would add the WBA title to his belt after defeating James Smith by unanimous decision. A couple months after this fight in August of 1987, he would add the IBF championship to his belts by winning a 12 round unanimous decision over Tony Tucker. By winning all three major belts he become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. Other notable fights in this late 1980s time period include Larry Holmes and Tyson's IBF championship win against Michael Spinks, the later of which would become another first round victim after being knocked down in the first 90 seconds of their match.
Personal Turmoil and Defeat
At this turn of the decade Tyson's personal life started to crumble with his future in a tug-of-war between Bill Clayton and Don King, he would slowly divorce his wife Robin Givens and fire his longtime trainer Kevin Rooney. With Rooney gone as his trainer, Tyson's skills deteriorated with him not using combinations and defense as much and going straight for heads instead of working the body up. At the start of 1990, on february 11th in Toyko, Tyson would be handed his first defeat at the hands of James "Buster" Douglas thereby losing his undisputed championship.
From Champion to Contender
After this setback, Tyson would slowly start his climb back to gain a championship title against Evander Holyfield who had became champion after defeating Douglas. One of his first fights would be a rematch against contender Henry Tillman who had beaten Tyson in his amateur career and took away his Olympic hopes. Other notable fights were his two matches against number two contender Donovon Ruddock, both would be won in Tyson's favor.
Prison
After his wins against Ruddock, Tyson was set up for a title fight against Evander Holyfield in the fall of 1991. This fight although would be halted until coming years as Tyson would be arrested for rape in the summer of 1991. At the start of 1992, he would be sentenced for six years in prison, serving three of them. He would be released in the spring of 1995.
Comeback
After his release his first matches would be in the later parts of 1995 with easy wins against Peter McNeeley and Buster Mathis Jr. He would then go on to win back the WBA championship belt with a rematch win against Frank Bruno. Then would go on to win the WBA championship by defeating Bruce Seldon.
Tyson vs Holyfield I & II
With his victories, Tyson would then face Evander Holyfield in late 1996. Holyfield would beat Tyson in eleven rounds and become the first person to hold the heavyweight title three times. Tyson would complain that Holyfield won by use of his frequent headbutts. In their rematch Tyson would be disqualified by biting off both of Holyfield's ears in what Tyson said was a retaliation of Holyfield's headbutts. Tyson would later apologize, his boxing license would be revoked for over a year until the fall of 1998.
More Problems
His next fight would be against Francois Botha who would mock Tyson, but became knocked out in the fifth round. Soon after in 1991, he would assault two motorists after a car crash and serve ninth months in prison. In the fall of 1999 he would face and defeat Orlin Norris. Tyson would make a round of visits around the world fighting boxers Julius Francis in Manchester, England. Defeat Lou Savarese in Glasgow, Scotland. Come back to the US to win against Andrzej Golota which was changed to no contest after Tyson tested positive for marijuana. Tyson would go on to beat Brain Nielsen in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Lennox Lewis & Retirement
His next fight would be for a heavyweight championship against Lennox Lewis who held the IBF, IBO and WBC heavyweight titles. Lewis would win this 100 million dollar pay-per-view grofight by the eighth round. In February 22, 2003 he would have his last victory by defeating Clifford Etienne in 50 seconds of the first round. He would then be defeated by Danny Williams and Kevin McBride, losing the later by a torn ligament of his leg cause in the first round. Mike Tyson retired in 2005, claiming he doesn't have the heart anymore.
Recently
Although Mike Tyson has made over $300 million in his career, he declared bankruptcy in 2003. Mike Tyson publicly states he has been embarrassed with his life and that it was a waste. Tyson frequently ranks in the top of most peoples list of greatest boxers of all time. In 2006 he was arrested with suspicion of DUI and felony drug possession in Scottsdale, Arizona. Tyson would soon go to jail for 24 hours and served 360 hours of community service.
Notables
In 1987 he would have a nintendo game named after him "Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!". In 1989 Tyson was given an honorary doctorate in Humane Letters by the Central State University of Ohio. Tyson often appears in cameos of himself in various media.
