LOS ANGELES (AP) - Miley Cyrus said she's embarrassed by an apparently racy photo spread appearing in the upcoming issue of Vanity Fair.
"I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be 'artistic' and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed. I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about," Cyrus said Sunday in a statement through her publicist.
The photos, by renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz, were taken to accompany an interview with the 15-year-old pop star and her father, singer Billy Ray Cyrus. They include shots of the teen reportedly topless and wrapped in a blanket.
The Disney Channel, which airs Cyrus' TV show "Hannah Montana," was also critical of Vanity Fair.
"Unfortunately, as the article suggests, a situation was created to deliberately manipulate a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines," a network statement said.
A phone message left for a Vanity Fair representative was not immediately returned Sunday night. But in a statement to the TV show "Entertainment Tonight," Vanity Fair defended its position.
"Miley's parents and/or minders were on the set all day," the magazine said. "Since the photo was taken digitally, they saw it on the shoot and everyone thought it was a beautiful and natural portrait of Miley."
Cyrus is one of the biggest - and most G-rated - acts in the country and is often considered a role model for young girls.
Her "Best of Both Worlds" tour sold out arenas, and her successful 3-D concert film collected $31.3 million in its opening weekend in February.
The Vanity Fair photo spread of Miley Cyrus has been released! As always, here are some of the interview highlights:
On Sex and the City: "It's my favorite show! I love it! Obviously not the scenarios. But if you watch Sex and the City, like the way the friends are, the way that it's dry and they all have distinct characters-that's a thing we try to do on our show."
On the infamous semi-topless shot: "No, I mean I had a big blanket on. And I thought, This looks pretty, and really natural. I think it's really artsy. [And] it wasn't in a skanky way.... And you can't say no to [photographer Annie Leibovitz]. She's so cute. She gets this puppy-dog look and you're like, O.K."
On whose career trajectory she'd like to follow: "Before, I'd say like Hilary Duff. But there can't be a thousand Hilary Duffs. Then that doesn't make Hilary special. And there can't be a thousand Miley Cyruses, or that doesn't make me special. That's what a star is: they're different. A celebrity is different. So, no, mostly I want to make my own path."
On being well-adjusted to the fame and public attention: "That's just my personality. I don't get shaken or stirred up over anything. Which can be a problem sometimes. I'm just, like, so no emotions. I just don't let things faze me. I'm very much like my dad. My dad's like this."
On being pals with paparazzi camped out of her gated home. "Sometimes there'll be like 40. Sometimes 20, sometimes 30. Sometimes two. I'll stop and I'll do the picture. It's really funny. They'll buy our dinner and whatever. We've become friends."

TV show Entertainment Tonight released a provocative picture of Cyrus, 15, during a broadcast on Friday, and it's caused quite the stir.
The problem? She's only 15!

Talk about a paedophile's dream.
I'm no prude, and am quite liberal when it comes to self-expression, but I think this strip is seriously ill judged.
Cyrus is an idol for legions of teenage fans worldwide, and posing for a magazine with nothing but a blanket covering up her modesty is not a good move. She's 15, remember.
The Vanity Fair cover shot comes to light barely a week after pictures of the Disney sweetheart sporting a green bra with her boyfriend Thomas Sturges were leaked online.
Some celebrity news bloggers speculate that the Vanity Fair pictures are merely the product of a nifty photoshopper, but I'm not so sure.

Seriously! she is a teenager. Vanessa did FAR worse! I think you hsould drop it! She is till AWESOME and so COOL! so Shut it!
It is sad today how many girls are exploited. Comparing her to the fact that other teens have done worse is sad. Who is going to stand up for our young woman's morality these days. She is fifteen and the blame lies with the parents. They should have said no to the photographer. They should have protected their daughter's innocence. My seven year old adores her but I don't want her thinking that her clothing choices are appropiate. Still love Miley though. Let this be a lesson learned.
yo yo yo my niggas!! this bitch be trippin homie. she dont need to be all embarassed. trick ass hoe! she fine as a mutha fucka!! who gives a fuck if this broad be half naked? i like that shit my nigga.
ok first the picture is not bad its a very classy shot, it dosent make her look like a slut, thats an a artistic picture and u see worse on americas next top model only reson why people are acting up cuz shes a disney girl and they have to be perky all the time, watch put that much pressure on the girl and say hello to the next britney spears
Oh MY GOD PPL! GIVE HER A BREAK!! The only thing she is showing is her back, and as for the sleepover pics, thats what 15 year old girls DO at slumber parties!!!You guys just have to find SOMETHING wrong with EVERY one of those Disney channel stars and it's NOT right!!
I guess this is the hot topic in Cyberspace or Blogland, or whatever you want to call it.
I just came over from Wordpress.com where the same debate is ranging. As for me, you mean her real name isn't Montana??? :-)
Check out my blog at http://adsensestrategiesadsense.wordpress.com
the one with her dad kinda creeps me out...and she needs to pull her shirt down a lil.
First off.. to "some nigga" You're a dumb worthless nigger, learn proper english before you try to communicate. Miley Cyrus is just choosing the path to be a slut like the rest of the pop stars you all obsess over, she no different than every other teen girl in the world. Your mind numbing obsession of celebrities is pathetic people!! Get a life, go to school, stop wasting your time idolizing people who are good pretending to be something they're not. All actors/actresses don't deserve what they have, they don't contribute to the world in anyway except for the few that have donated to charities. You put these people on a pedastool like they actually should be worshiped like some idol, you people are pathetic, find real heros, people who actually made a difference in the world.
hi all yes
The photos were taken by Annie Friggin' Leibowitz. I agree it's not tasteful for a 15-year-old girl to be photographed in such a way, but it's no shock that a photo by Leibowitz is going to be provocative. Look at her past work with John and Yoko, Lance Armstrong, and a photo series she recently did with John Mayer for a GAP campaign. From a purely artistic standpoint, people have to admit that it's slightly more wholesome than the infamous Britney Spears cover of Rolling Stone in 2003. Let's just hope that Cyrus' career path doesn't parallel Spears'.
This wasn't a smart move for Cyrus if she needs to maintain her G-rated image for her fans, but her parents did approve WHILE PRESENT ON THE SET. I like how she's apologizing for this whole incident after promoting it prior to the issue's release. Can anyone else smell the work of Disney's PR people?
What can be done about it now? Talk about it. Talk it up so it's one of the biggest photo phenoms of 2008. It's getting publicity, regardless of what kind, and Leibowitz is probably having the last laugh.
my dog is more provocative than her vanity fair hocus
I don't really care who or what she is my only concerns are that first and foremost this is the manipulation and exploitation of a minor by her guardian and second that many young american girls hold her in very high respects and try to emmulate what she does, how do her actions impress those children, many of whom already have lowered moral standards and desensatized values.
I think that the photograph with Billy Ray Cyrus is only inappropriate in the way it is presented by their clothing and facial expressions. Perhaps if they were smiling or better dressed it would look more like a family photo and less like the cover of a erotic novel.
But then again most of her fans will just think it is 'amazingly cool' that she is allowed such 'freedoms' and the publicity from this most recent stunt will probably only increase her stardom and popularity by arousing the interestes of perhaps an older group who find her less of an teen pop idol and more of an attractive female artist.
Cute!!, but not her most flattering pictures.-poses-photography!!
Marketing Hype. She's with her Dad. There is nothing even sexy about her. She's 15. When she's 30 she'll be the new Debbie Gibson. It's all about SPIN and creating and image to market while she's HOT to 10 year old PreTeen Girls.
be proactive rather than creative
She's embarrassed now? Surely she knew that it was vanity fair before they were taken
I can't believe some people are having a heart attack over a 15 year old girl posing for a photo.... Get a grip people!!!!! Britney Spears little sister has done far worse than that by getting pregnant at 16 for god sakes..
I think that this whole Vanity Fair thing has blown WAY OUT OF PROPORTION. Yeah, granted she is only 15, but she's not NAKED. She is completely covered and I don't think the pose is exactly provacative. She has an innocent look on her face. I know that she is an role model for young girls, but this is what Hollywood does to young stars and I don't think Miley should be faulted in anyway. Like she said, she couldn't say no to the photographer. If she throws a fit with ONE photographer, the word will get around and 1. that will be in the news 2. some photographers won't want to even work with her. So, in my opinion GIVE THE GIRL A BREAK!!
well.it'ds not soo bad i mean here in lebanon we have far worse pictures than that !!Don't worry miley you are about my age i'm sixteen....don't be scared you're far smarter than all of this !!&you're beautiful...sooo it's not a dirty picture and finallly i hope that american stop saying wrong thins about arab people ....we love hollywood we love hannah montanah and mostly we love miley cyrus....and we will always support her ....She is our beloved one ...Let her enjoy her teen years while they last!!!
and for that psyco photographer .....i say it would be better if you had gone to art school.... get a life and think before clicking any button!!And for the nigga thing :go fuck a slut on the streets mister and stop talking or even looking at that young girl's picture!!becoz you're just a cheap "nigga"like you have said !!burn in hell !!where u will meet all your "black"friends!!stupid jurk!!!!!!!!!
I do not see anything wrong with the photos that were taken for Vanity Fair. In fact, I think the one with the blanket is beautiful. There are much more pressing, important issues in this country that need our attention at this time that no one wants to comment on. If people cared as much about our troops over seas or these damn gas prices as they do these pics of Miley Cyrus......our country and economy would be in way better shape. Where are our priorities these days?????
Some great pictures that you've posted here. I don't buy into the controversy of her Vanity Fair photos, but rather think it was just a poor publicity gimmick. She's doing fine on the merrit of her music, and doesn't need to be making ridiculous "risque" pictures.
... hey guyz iam filipino...first i would like 2 introduce myself..ahm..i think i am the no.1 fans of miley.. nfact..kami na yatang dalawa..LOL.. you guyz{miley} keep it..miley
