Miley Cyrus as a role model

Another day another Miley Cyrus scandal. It seems every time we turn around this poor girl is on the cover of some tabloid/website/or internet provider site (Yahoo, MSN, etc.). Now let me begin by saying that I think that Miley is very good for what she is, a 15 year old girl with a pretty popular TV show. Her songs are catchy and upbeat, her show is geared towards the tween group teaching people to be basically good. Come on people it is Disney, we all know that they know what they are doing by this point as far as catching our children's attention and holding it for periods of time.

Now since she has become a household name at the age of 14, it is no surprise that many parents say she is a role model. While I understand that our children do look up to the characters they see on TV, lets face it, teens don't make the best decisions in the world!

Unfortunately, with the age of the internet their mistakes are made world wide in a matter of moments. This happens every day on MySpace, FacePages, YouTube, etc. I agree, that she is not making the brightest moves in the world, but how is she really any different than any other teen out there?

Her latest "scandal" was of a video she made mocking Selina Gomez and Demi Lovato. How many girls put up videos making fun of other students in their school on a daily basis? Just because these 3 are on the same TV station does not mean they are friends, they are actually more apt to be rivals in this situation. No different than the cheerleaders vs the dance team at a high school.

The other biggie was pictures of her kissing a boy. Well she is 15 now, when we were 15 we were kissing too, but we had the luxury of not being constantly followed and most of us didn't have cameras back then (thank God!). Had there been cameras when I was growing up like there are now I would hate to imagine how many stupid things I did would have been caught on tape!

Now her racier pictures, not the ones in the mags, the ones of her in the shower, those were just plain stupid on her part... but again she is 15! Also these kids are seeing more money along with responsibilities that most of us can never imagine much less understand. How can we expect these kids to be "normal" or behave like children when our children are already growing up so fast and they are exposed to so much more?

It is our responsibility as parents to explain to our children that these are people, they are famous they are not like us in any way. Putting them on a pedestal and proclaiming them to be "role models" in the most turbulent times of their lives is just not the smartest move we can make.

These poor children are definitely blessed to have financial freedom for the rest of their lives (if they have good advisers), but they lose their child hood before they have a chance to be a child. I feel very sorry for these children in a way, and wish them the best of luck. While at the same time I realize they are children and will make child mistakes. These are lessons we can use to teach our children and use the mistakes as role models if you must about the dangers of a simple choice having major consequences. Unfortunately in today's world the rich and famous are not the only ones being run through the wringer online!

I agree. she is only a teenager and will definitely act like one.I'm not exactly sure that kids see her a s a "role model". Seems to me that a child with proper parenting would have other older "role models" and merely see her as one of them. Now, if a child does not have proper parenting, then, of course, they may be led astray. But I don't think we can blame the celebrities for that.

I know some people take a prudish viewpoint about these Disney stars. They are merely entertainers and, sometimes, go on to be more.
