Miley Cyrus MySpace Picture Scandal: Top Five Tips for Parents
80Vanity Fair Picture-Fifteen Year Old Miley
A new scandal for the beloved Miley Cyrus a.k.a. Hannah Montana. New pictures have surfaced on the web of the scantilly clad, partially nude Miley posing suggestively for the camera. Myspace users came across these pictures on their Friend's accounts. To every young girl's shock and dismay, Miley's MySpace alias kaylee is posting her suggestive bathroom self-poses on her account. The gossip is that the young celebrity is bored and turned to her MySpace account for fun. The photos have leaked around MySpace and are now in the hands of every pre-teen and teen who has kaylee a.k.a. Miley on their account. The new pictures cannot be downloaded from the MySpace account. As a parent, I also feel reluctant posting the YouTube pictures. Truthfully, some of these pictures are innocent shots of Miley and her friends at sleep-overs or beside the pool. Some of the pictures of Miley and her boyfriend may be viewed as suggestive or not. As a parent, the scandal is not really about the photos themselves, but the outpouring of negative response that she is receiving.

Understand the MySpace World
The summer is a time when kids are at home alone and spend time on their MySpace accounts. They are often isolated from their friends and use this community as a social outlet. Can you blame them? When we were young, we walked over or rode our bikes to our friend's houses to hang out. We had freedom. These kids are held hostage by the paranoid world of our creation. What happens when kids can't interact in person with their peers? Well, they spend their time trying to connect on-line. They are human-beings after all. They are people who long for life-experience. Think back at your own pre-teen and teenage years. How would you feel if you were kept under lock and key? My best memories of my pre-teen and teenage years were the times when I could experience freedom. I rode my bike on my own through the countryside. I walked five miles to the local store on an errand. I explored nature alone and with friends. This is a gift that I can't give my children.

Why is this Happening?
Kids today are under adult surveillance 24/7. They seek freedom through their computer monitors. Freedom is a gift that I can't give my children. But, I can give them the gift of self-awareness and self-confidence. I can guide them to make positive choices without shielding them from the world. Maybe Billy Ray should have a little chat with K.A.Y.L.E.E.?

MySpace Safety Tip Number One
Parents ask "What can I do?"Simple and sweet: Delete her from your child's MySpace Friends List. She isn't a friend, she is a celebrity. Her alias is K.A.Y.L.E.E. Don't be shocked by the comments that she makes with her pictures.

MySpace Safety Tip Number Two
Don't be fooled when your child says that "All the kids are doing this". Yes, it is true that under-age bikini-clad teenage girls are posing suggestively on MySpace. Look at your son or daughter's Friends' profiles and pics. You may be shocked. Remember, these are children. THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING! These girls are posing, taking sexually suggestive pictures of themselves, and posting them on their accounts for their friends. But, not all girls are posing suggestively. Explain the difference between the two styles of photographs.

MySpace Safety Tip Number Three
If you need to take a legal stance, explain that the legal age of sexual consent is eighteen years old. If you prefer to take a moral or religious stance, you may also outline the immorality or "sinfullness" according to your religious beliefs. Across the board, religiouns frown upon the sexualization and exploitation of children. Anger will get you no-where. Be truthful and honest. Your child may feel uncomfortable with their friend's pictures, but they don't want to betray their trust. There seems to be an unwritten rule in their circles for these pictures. Talk about the dangers of peer pressure and group secrets.
Sarcasm Gets Us No-where...but, it's funny LOL
MySpace Safety Tip Number Four
If you feel that you cannot trust your child, you may have to pull the plug temporarily until you feel that they can make better decisions. Otherwise, you will spend hours trying to monitor their every move. You will become exhausted, and they will feel angry. You may have to deal with their anger when you lay down the MySpace or A.I.M. restrictions, but in the long run, you have made the correct decision. Any instances where they are cyber-bullying or becoming involved in this type of activity as a perpetrator or a victim should be handled swiftly and consistently. These behaviors are dangerous for all involved.

MySpace Safety Tip Number Five
What do you do when your child has a friend who posts suggestive pictures? Talk to them about this. Really, simply deleting friends left and right won't teach them anything. These days, you have to be realistic about your pre-teen and teens life. Help them understand when they should take the moral high-ground, when they should back away from friendships, when they should turn to adults for help when a friend seems like they are lost, and when they should step in and take a stand. Empower your child. They live in an internet culture that we must recognize. Guide them through their maturity with love, respect, and understanding.

Wow nice shocking hub.
Great tips for safety on MySpace. I think you are right - kids are kind of held hostage at home because their parents are concerned about thier safety in the real world.
Amy Jane--There doesn't seem to be any solution for this right now. I'm sure that this influences their development and maturation. I was thinking that these kids are maturing sexually instead of socially due to their warped view of the world through the lens of the computer screeen.
yes, that is why I do not join myspace
I worry about Miley and what is going to happen to her once she drops out of the spotlight. Will she be a another victim of child stardom?
On another note, when I was younger the majority of moms did not work outside the home. So, there was always supervision. Yes, we definitely had more freedom, but most of us had a parent watching us during the day or taking us places to get us out of the house. Today, many families are two income families, so these kids that are not old enough to drive (but old enough to stay home alone) are stuck at home all summer long with no supervision WITH Internet access. That is a bad combination.
its a shame how innocent teen icons are exploited by the media.
She's a good example for youngsters on her TV shows. But this expoitation is a major turn-off for kids that admired her so much. Well, we can't blame them when they are alone and don't get a quality time with their family. As parents, we need to interact and guide our kids since it's our major role and our kids won't have to seek any ways or methods to spend time if they have nothing to do.
thats shocking. thanks for an interesting hub.

I'm not entirely surprised by her actions. She's a teenager. Teenagers like attention. We'll get it any way we can. Sure, she has her own TV show and concerts galore, but that doesn't exactly give the same kind of attention we vye for. Plus, the whole suggestive posing thing is extremely common, not just on MySpace. I'm not saying it's a good thing, heck no! I can't stand seeing that kind of crap from my generation! But I can tell you most teen girls do this because they want personal attention; they want individuals to look at them and talk to them, make them feel pretty and special and unique, give them the empowerment of being an individual. And yeah, we can get that from our parents and our friends, but these kinds of girls thrive on stranger compliments. It's rather sickening, but that's my opinion. What she needs to do is drop this loser guy she's with (I know almost nothing of the celebrity world, but I have heard about the old man she's been seeing) and find someone her own age. That right there MIGHT get her to screw her head on straight. Maybe. If we're lucky.
hi nice blog add me on myspace

As a subscriber to Vanity Fair magazine, for which the photo at the top pf the hub was done, I was shocked that Billy Ray *allowed and encouraged* his 15-yr-old daughter to be photographed so suggestively. So much for the all-American, squeaky clean perception Hannah Montana and Miley as Hannah enjoyed until then - once out, the genie cannot be put back into the bottle. I'm soooo thankful my own children grew up before the internet, text messaging, and MySpace existed. My sympathies to any of you dealing with the issues outlined above. Great hub, Cailin!
you guy need to stop

Hello an invitacion send you in facebook!!! Fans Chile....
I feel like all teenagers go through that "I want attention really bad" stage. But this is the most dangerous way to show it. I went through it but the thing is it kind of shows a lack of self respect and it can get the really wrong kind of attention. I wish women and girls could see that there is beauty in everyone and you don't need to pull up your shirt to show it.
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
Y CNT SHE JUST GROW UP!!!!!!!!!

Miley Cyrus is a stupid slut who is going the same way as Britney Spears-and that doesn't refer to her heaping piles of money. Anybody who heard the rukus caused by Vanessa Hudgens knows what I mean.
