What is a Milk Snake

Milk snake is a species of king snake. There are 25 subspecies among the milk snakes. Commonly known Scarlet Kingsnake is one of its sub species.



Names

There is an early myth about milk snakes that they suck cow udders to get milk, thus the common name milk snakes. This myth is entirely false as these snakes do not possess physical capabilities to suck milk. Their French name is Couleuvre tachetée, while in Spanish they are called Culebra-real coralillo.



Distribution of Milk Snakes

Milk snakes are distributed from southeastern Canada, through most of the continental United States, to Central America, down to western Ecuador and northern Venezuela of northern South America.



Size

These snakes normally grow 20 to 60 inches long.



Diet

They are opportunistic  hunters. Young milk snakes normally feed on slugs, insects, and earthworms. Adult milksnake's diet includes lizards, birds, bird eggs, snakes, frogs, fish and small mammals.



Life span

The milk snakes typically live for around 12 years.



Reproduction:

They lay a clutch of about 10 eggs. After incubation of about 2 months their young are born and come out into this world.
