There is not much talk about this but in there are more than 20 million Americans that suffer from social anxiety and there are many more that dont look for help and are going through their pain alone without the hope of ever recovering.

Some of them are afraid to go to work, to go to the supermarket, to be seeing by others, to be judge by their image, to shake and sweet when talking, to give their opinion, go out and have to talk with a stranger, to ask for directions. Those are some of the common problems that people with social anxiety have, they have an extreme fear of being judged by others at any situation.

Everyone experience it in different ways and severity, some are just afraid of speaking in public or give a performance, but in others is a constant fear of being seen by others which can the produce depression.

There is a high percentage of people with social phobia that use drugs and alcohol as a way out of their anxieties and fears, however this is just a temporary remedy that can hurt themselves and become an addiction.

The most common types of treatments for social anxiety are counseling, Behavioral Therapy, hypnosis, Medications and natural remedies.

As a short term solution for severe cases medications are effective but they cause side effects and not every medication work for everybody, so you might have to try several prescription medications to see which one gives you the best results.

Behavioral Therapy is known as the most effective type of psychotherapy for treating this disorder and has produced very positive long term results.

Here is the process that happens to a person with social anxiety in a social encounter:

  • Trigger the Situation
  • Beliefs and assumptions are activated
  • The situation is perceived as socially dangerous
  • The person is self conscious is focused on himself
  • Safety behaviors are trigger
  • Signs and symptoms of anxiety appear

That is what happens in the mind of the person, behavioral therapy will help change those beliefs and assumptions so you are less self conscious and your fears of a perceived dangerous social situation disappear.

You will need to stop focusing on your internal worries and find curiosity to know other people and learn to enjoy chatting with other people.

Other methods that help are relaxation techniques, yoga, meditation, hypnosis, improving self confidence, communication skills, etc.

The lost Opportunity

Dont let this problem pass anymore without getting help if you have this disorder or you know someone that needs help. There are many lost opportunities that they have for not treating their problem, things that you want to do in life, experiences you want to feel, moments you want to enjoy, all that can be done if you improve your self with therapy.
