History of Minnetonka

“Native Americans wore moccasins long before Columbus discovered the America. It’s fair to say that moccasins are truly America’s first footwear. Completely casual, they define a relaxed and comfortable lifestyle.

Since their beginning in 1946, Minnetonka Moccasin has shaped the moccasin’s place in history.

Following World War II, Americans took to the highways to discover its natural beauty. Visiting resorts and souvenir shops, they brought Minnetonka moccasins home to the new American suburbs. The soon became casual classics.

Today, Minnetonka is a big player in American style. Minnetonka moccasins, fringe, sandals, shearling, boots, slippers, hats and accessories can be seen everywhere, from the streets of New York to the mountains of Colorado. From the Opry in Nashville to the Santa Monica pier and from London to Tokyo. No matter the footprint, all are made with genuine “moccasin soul."

It's a simple idea...Classic desing that never grows old combined with a natural, free spirited heritage. Minnetonka Moccasin continues to define casual and comfortable American style.

Purpose & Goal

We know today that Minnetonka moccasins were made by Native Americans quite a few years ago, but why, and what where they made for?

In the early days Native Americans had very harsh conditions including very heavy snow in the winter and scorching heat in the summer, and walking around with bare feet just wasn’t going to cut it.

The Native Americans were very creative in their ways, and always could find some way to over come their problems, as well as find a use for every part of an animal that they had hunted.  The Native Americans would use the hides of various animals for everything from clothes to shoes to head dresses, and no part went to waste.  Thus came the era of what we now know as Minnetonka moccasins.

Another very important thing that played a big part in the development  of moccasins was the need to hunt very quietly.  The design of the original moccasins was to suppress sounds made by a hunter stalking his prey, thus giving him a better chance at obtaining his goal.
