My Experience: Mirena IUC Birth Control

My Name is Stephanie. That's me in the picture on the right. I made the choice to use the Mirena IUD as my method of birth control back in June of '07. I researched everything about the Mirena birth control except actual mirena experience. Perhaps if I had I may not have chose to get the Mirena birth control due to all of the Mirena side effects there seem to be but nonetheless, I do not regret my choice.

I chose the Mirena IUC birth control because I am terrible at remembering to take medications. I wanted a no fuss, no work birth controlthat would allow me the security of knowing that for the next 5 years unless I decide otherwise, I will not be having any more children. I didn't want anything permanent but I do want the option to have children later on if I choose to do so.

What is the Mirena IUC?

The Mirena IUC is an estrogen-free intrauterine contraceptive device that is 99.9% effective in preventing pregnancy. The small contraceptive device is inserted by your doctor into the the vagina, passed the cervix and implanted in the uterus. The Mirena IUD is a T-shaped plastic device that slowly releases small amounts of the hormone Levonorgestrel. It works by:

  • Block sperm from reaching or fertilizing your egg
  • Make the lining of your uterus thin (this may also result in benefits like less menstrual bleeding over time)
  • Stop the release of your egg from your ovary (but this is not the way it works in most cases)

The 2 Month Mirena Spotting Period

Imagine your longest normal period. 7 days? 8? Now imagine having a period for almost 2 months and with constant cramping. I have never really had intense cramping during my periods, but during this 2 month period, there were many moments when all I wanted to do was lay down against the side of the couch.

MY Mirena Experience: Getting The Mirena IUC

The day I went to have the IUC inserted I had no idea what I was in for. I have dealt with some pretty serious physically painful experiences but this definetly found it self up near the top of the "Sh** that's painful" list. Put this one up for my first Mirena side effect Now, the Mirena Website says the following in their faq:

Q. Will it hurt?

A. Some women may experience some discomfort while Mirena is being placed. Uterine cramps, which feel like menstrual cramps, and dizziness may also occur, but typically disappear within a day or two. Notify your healthcare professional if pain and other symptoms persist.

The registered nurse at my doctors office was a wee bit more accurate and told me "some women say it just feels mildy uncomfortable, others will grip the table and scream" Which one do you think I was? I learned that day from my mirena experience that I am a gripper and a screamer. The nurses at the nurses station just outside my room, also learned this that same day.

It hurt, it was painful, and I was cramped up for hours afterwards. I could not tell you what the pain was, but I do remember saying the same thing I said during the 13 hours the doctors tried to induce my labor. They had incorrectly inserted the inducement medication causing the most extremely uncomfortable feeling I've ever had. My catch phrase? "I am never doing this ever again" Of course, in about 4 years one of these will happen again. Time will tell which one wins out.

I Am Happy With Mirena

After the 2 months of heavy spotting, my periods disappeared. Only once a few months later did I have any sign of a period and that was just some light spotting caused by a medication I was on. I terminated the medication for other reasons, and the spotting went away again.

Other then that, thanks to my Mirena birth control, my period is non-existent. I consider this Mirena side effects to be a good one. I never have any cramping anymore, and I rarely even think about my IUD contraceptive. I've heard some stories from women very unhappy with their IUD's and say they experience many Mirena side effects. Me, not so much. The first 2 months were an inconvenience, but I don't regret my decision to get the Mirena IUD contraceptive.

However, with that said, I hesitate to recommend the Mirena IUD birth control device to my friends. If you have serious trouble remembering to take your birth control, then yes consider Mirena for your contraceptive needs. If you can remember you birth control, do the research before you opt for this method

Mirena Weight Gain

The Mirena site makes it very clear that "Won't cause significant Mirena weight gain". Significant must be subjective. Over the past 2 years, my total Mirena weight gain has been 25+lbs.. This most likely is also due to some stress experienced this past year, but I do beleive Mirena Weight gain plays a key role.

Mirena and Sex

I was lucky to have a understanding and patient boyfriend while going through this process with getting used to the Mirena IUD. More then once we had to stop because he could actually feel the plastic strings of the Mirena coming through my cervix during sex.

The Mirena strings are in place for removal and HAVE to be there, but they didn't have to be that long. The same registered nurse was able to cut them a little small and curl the ends. Only twice since then has he ever made comments about them.

I got my Mirena IUD inserted in September 2006. Previous years I have always had bad cramps, all type of problems assoicated with my cycle. I had been on Yasmin since it had came out and my OB suggested Mirena. It was the best decision I have ever made. I have no children and I must admit when I got it inserted it was somewhat painful but very bearful. They gave me some meds before and afterwards I had a few cramps. During the transition stage I had a cycle off and on for about 6 weeks after I got through this stage I hit home base. No more cycles. Rarely in spotting. My boyfriend doesn't have any problems with it. I always ask during sex if he feels it or anything and he says no. I would surely recommend this to anyone who has had major problems with your cycle and cramping. My OB is older and I have always trusted his judgement. Keep in mind your body can resist it. 80% of women do well and 20% don't do well. A co-worker just had a baby I suggested it to her she got it and has not had any problems. I don't get cramps, no soreness in my nipples or nothing like that. It's great. It is good for 5 years and I am counting down because I will get it inserted again in 2011.

I had a Mirena IUD put in about 2 months after my second child was born. It pinched for about 3 seconds and that was it - but then again, I had just gone through children birth shortly before. I had a few MILD mentral cramps that night and spotted for a few weeks after...but that was it. I can't feel it. My husband can't feel it. No weight gain, no acne, no bloating. When we decide if we want more children, I can have it out any time. When I went off oral contraceptives, it took me over a year to get pregnant. I'm hoping it won't take that long this time. I guess time will tell. If anything we can learn from this, obviously this device is different for everyone...just like any other medication.

I have had the Mirena for 3 months. Getting it was VERY painful! I cramped and bleed for 2 and half months and I am still spotting. I noticed recently that my strings are exposed MUCH more then they were when I got it so I went in for a check up. I am currently waiting for the imiging department to get ahold of me to go in for an ultrasound. I am hoping that it has just "settled" and they can cut some of the string length off and I can move on with life. I had some pain with sex in the beginning and this weird nipple pain for about a week - but all that is great now. I have LOST 15 pounds since I got the Mirena - but there have been other changes in my life habits besides just the Mirena. I do think that I feel better weith it then I did with the cheap "knock off" birth control I was on due to the cost of good birth controls!

I had Mirena inserted in oct 2007. Thought it was my best option post divorce and 3 children. The insertion was very painful...very painful, but only some cramps and bloating that night. Well, today, I had it removed...got sick of the side effects including: weight gain..20lbs that I could not drop! Recently I experienced severe nipple pains and headaches. My emotional state was not normal and I wanted to at least eliminate this factor to correctly judge my situation.Removal was easier and pain free. Hope to see difference soon!

My Boyfriend Feels The Strings But I Cant It Freaks Me Out Any Suggestions

I am a 36 year old mother of 1.

I had my tubes tide three years after my son was born due to problems from his birth I was only 24 years old at that time. I have had terrible periods ever since.

In the winter of 2008 the periods became extremely worse to the point of causing me to becoming extremely anemic in both B12 levels and iron.

Further testing discoverd that I had a growth in my uterus. Thats when I was refured to a gynocologist who sat down and explained we needed a plan.

I had surgery back in june of 2009. The doctor removed the growth(it was not cancer), did a D&C, and at the same time inserted my IUD. Talk about a shock to the system.

I did spot for about 3 weeks, had a small period a month after surgery and have had mimimum bleeding since.

I am gaining weight around 10 lbs in 6 mths, but I don't have to take iron pills and shots and only have a B12 shot once a month instead of weekly.

I have been feeling back to my old self if not better and think that the use of an IUD is a personal decision that only you and your physition can decide.

When my 5yrs are up I will be replacing my Mirena.

I have had mine for about 4 years now and I can honestly say it's the best thing that I have ever done. I am awful at taking pills and really didn't care for the side effects of them either. The inserting was uncomfortable but I knew it would be going into it. I figured the 15 minutes of pain was worth not getting pregnant and not having to worry about taking birth control for the next 5 years. There was some cramping the first couple of days but no worse than the period cramps I had before. I haven't had a period the entire time which I have never missed. The mood swings I used to have with my period are now gone as well. I am planning to have another one put in as soon as this one comes out. I think it's one of those things that effects everyone differently but for me I couldn't be happier!

In June of this year, I had the Mirena put in as I have had breakthrough problems for the last four years. Nothing worked and nothing was wrong with me. I'm in my late 30's and have never been pregnant so this was the last procedure to try that wouldn't prevent me from getting pregnant if I wanted.

I took 800mg of Motrin about 45 min prior to my appt. and it felt like bad cramps while it was being inserted but stopped afterwards. I had mild cramping for a few weeks and spotting off and on for the first three months (which my doctor said would probably happen.) Periods are hardly anything and do not happen all the time. I've had very mild cramping once or twice since the initial few weeks. It's been great. Sex drive is still there as well. As far as the weight gain, I've gained about 10 lbs since June however I started a workout regimen at the same time so some was due to building muscle however once I started keeping a food journal, I've lost all of it plus a few extra lbs.

My best friend is going in today to have it done and I know a few others on it and it is so much better than taking a pill every day.

I am a 40 yr old woman who has had no children and I got my mirena in 3 months ago. Insertion was easier with the help of meditation and visualization. I love my mirena -- shorter almost nonexistent periods and no pain, no spotting , no problems.... looks like every woman is different...

I know alot of people have made negative comments about Mirena; however, my experience with Mirena has been nothing but positive with the exception of the plastic strings being too long ( my huband said it was like making love to a briar patch.) I already have 2 children & I was desperately seeking a birth control method that was not only extremely effective, but would not have serious health risks such as blood clots. I found Mirena to be the blessing I was looking for! The insertion of Mirena was not as painful as many claim and I would gladly endure the slight uncomfort again to have my Mirena! I strongly recommend Mirena for anyone who is seeking a birth control method that is reliable, risk free, and not as evasive as some surgical procedures!

I am 21 and have had Mirena for three years now. My doctor decided it might be worth a try as I can't take any version of the pill. The first three months i had a lot of pain, cramping, and even had an ultrasound to make sure it was inserted correctly (it was). After the initial three months though, my periods stopped entirely, and the cramping only happens a few times per year. I have no other side effects. The only reason i am getting it take out is because sex is extremely painful if my partner and I aren't very cautious. If it weren't for that, I wouldn't hesitate to leave it in for the remaining two years, as in the long run I have been very satisfied with it. (since i was so young when I got Mirena, and had never had a child, it WAS extremely painful to get inserted, however.)

I have had my Mirena for a little over a year. I love it! yeah when I went to have it put in it hurt. I mean it hurt so bad I cursed my doctor and the nurse and anyone passing by the door. One of the things that you are told to watch for is to stick your finger up your vaginal opening and feel for the strings. If you can not feel the strings then you need to go to the doctor to make sure that it is still in place. I was told by my doctor that if the strings were untouchable than either your mirena came out or they are crammed up there. You really need to watch for it though. I have had carmping for the first two days of getting my mirena. I nearly passed out in the room where the procedure occured. My doctor told me to lay down on the table and rest for a bit. I did. I got up after my rest and went home. The Pain was worse than when I had my son. Was it worth it? Honestly I can say, Yes! It was worth it. I do not want anymore children. Since I am only 21, I cant get a more perminant procedure. So, I found this one. When I was on Seasonique I became pregnant to my stupidity. I took prescription medicine that I had for a bladder infection and my seasonique and here I am one year later with a beautiful one year old blue eyed boy. I love my son. But, I do not want anymore children... So, This Mirena is a great alternative for now! I would definately reccommend it to everyone! But, I would tell you my story and my side effects first!

I can't take birth control at all it makes me ill, physically!! I was so sick from them I couldn't work, go to school, I could barely leave my house. I threw up almost every day repeatedly. I went to the doctors several times to try to find out what it was. My friends and family told me it may have been my pills but I didn't think so I'd been on them for about two years with no problems. I first tried switching from morning to night and nothing happened. I finally stoped taking them and almost imeediently felt better. I waited two months before trying a new one and now I'm starting to get the same symptoms. I've heared alot of good things about mirena, from atleast five people and i've talked to my doctor. But I've never had kids but this feels like my only option. I have had estegen related cancers in my family and simce this has no estrogen it seems like the best choice.

My next appointment is in a week I'd like to hear what others have to say about this. is Mirena the best choice for me or is there anything better?

Well I just got my Iud two days ago. The first day I could feel the strings just a few inches in. Then the next day it was gone, but I am slightly bleeding out brown stuff and blood. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem? Should I go back to the Doctors? Do the strings move? I squated and even felt around as high up as I could and nothing.

This is too weird. I went for my annual exam today. I had Mirena put in on 9/8/08. I thought it was the best thing as well since I already had a son (7) at the time (I got pregnant on the pill)and had no plans to have anymore and my Dr. refuses to tie my tubes until I am 35 or have one more. Which if me and my husband are ok with our decision, what business is it of his but..anywhoo.. I never thought about it, I should have kept a journal but now that I think about it. My sex drive is way down, I am grouchy, I have alot of acne, and I have gained weight. I also complained of chest pains to the Dr.today. well really the inside part of my lower boobs. I also feel bloated all the time. I had even gone to a gastroenterologist to see if something else was going on.... guess it is all related? Ugh birth control is so annoying to think about but we have to. What else can we do, I refuse to do the shot or pill again?

All the negative comments on this page surprise me. I have had the Mirena for eight years and have had NO problems with it at all.

The insertion was uncomfortable for about a minute, I did take 800mg of advil prior to my appointment. I did have some spotting for about six months, but it was extremely light and did not have that problem when I had a new one placed five years later. The first IUD I had did cause mild cramping for a few weeks, but again, nothing major at all.

I no longer have periods, my sex drive is as it was before and I did not experience weight gain. I have not had any children either. This has been a very good option for me in every way.

I have recommended it to many friends and all have had similar positive experiences. Especially my friends who wanted to have more children but were not ready to do so just then. They liked that they were able to become pregnant right away after the IUD was removed.

I highly suggest that women seek out a skilled professional for this procedure. Educate yourselves on your health care providers as well as the products you want to use for birth control. There are many options and no one way will work for everyone. I do recommend this product to just about anyone, but it is a personal choice that you should discuss with your doctor first.

I am thinking about getting the Mirena. I just had a baby five weeks ago and go for my check up! Does anyone suggest a new form rather than the mirena if it is as bad as you all say it is? And it cant be as bad as having a baby right!

Courtney  says:

I've had my Mirena out for almost a week now, and things are great. I'm bleeding a little bit...but nothing crazy. I don't even need a pad, just a panty liner. I was hoping that my sex drive would come roaring back, but it's taking a little while. :-) Still no cramping though, and I feel a lot happier and more energetic.

I wish all of you the best of luck with your Mirena, but I for one am glad to be rid of it!
