Mirror, Mirror on my Walls

Decorating with mirrors is a wonderful way to make your house appear brighter and more spacious. Discover versatile ways of using mirrors in your home décor.

Gone are the days when mirrors were considered nothing but utility items. Nowadays, mirrors are given their due attention when planning a home décor - after all, the overall look and feel of a room may greatly depend on the size, shape and positioning of a mirror. Plain or decorative, mirrors are a fantastic way to add extra light as well as visual space and depth to any room.

Here are a few tips and ideas for using mirrors in your home décor:

  • If you are going to use decorative mirrors, make sure to select frames that match the room's style. For example, to complement a nautical or tropical home décor choose a mirror framed in sea shells. Or if you have a lavish home with ornate furniture and lush oriental area rugs you will want to choose a traditional ornamental frame. Or if your curtains, area rugs and upholstery have floral designs, you may want to pick a mirror with a similar decorative frame.
  • When placing a mirror, always consider what it is going to reflect. Ideally, the mirror should reflect only attractive items, like a beautiful painting, for example. Consider placing a mirror opposite the window for adding extra light, or main entrance for increasing the visual space of the room.
  • To make a narrow stairway or hallway look wider, hang mirrors on both sides, preferably right opposite each other.
  • Similarly, to make a room appear larger than it is in reality, place big mirrors on the opposite walls, or put one mirror right across the entrance of the room.
  • Double the impact of your decorative accents by placing mirrors behind the items. Display your collectables in mirrored showcases; keep your china set in a mirrored cupboard, or let a mirror multiply the effect of your antique chandelier. The ideas here are virtually unlimited.
  • Consider grouping small mirrors together - make sure they match in size and shape, or share a common detail, like frame color. You will know you have got it right, if all the mirrors in the group create a harmonious look.
  • If you are really in an experimenting mood, try decorating your ceiling with a mirror mosaic - it will complement to any kind of lighting and make a room look stunning with clusters of reflected light around.
  • Use miniature decorative mirrors to stylize your curtains, soft furniture and cushion slipovers, tablecloth, etc.
  • Decorative mirrors can be combined with paintings to adorn space above a sofa or fireplace.
  • Remember that mirrors can be customized; use this to your advantage - get a mirror of the exact size and shape you want and make it the centerpiece of your room. Even a frame can be custom-made according to your specifications!
  • Make sure that the majority (if not all) of your mirrors are placed at a usable height - at the end of the day, having so many mirrors around and not being able to see yourself in them can be frustrating.
