For people who are serious about belly dancing it is really frustrating when there are so many misconceptions about it. Here I go through some of the annoying misconceptions people I have come across.

Belly dancing is to seduce men.

Uhhhh wrong! No it is not to seduce men. I know most people think that belly dancers are in harems dancing in front of sultans but it is not like that. It is a fun dance designed by women for women. Yes of course it is sexy for many reasons. It does give women a lot of confidence. You can enjoy dancing and toning your body at once and you do feel good about yourself. The outfits too can seem pretty racy to some but the reasons the outfits are like that is to allow free movement and not be restricting. In most Arab countries belly dancing is practised with your family. Even children do belly dancing. Belly dancers wear then some of today’s so called fashion.

Belly dancing is for slim women.

No, of course not. This is one of the things that I love about belly dancing. It is open to everyone. Women can be of all sizes and shapes, not a problem. Depending on the workout belly dancing can help you tone and sculpt your body (especially the torso). Many people start belly dancing later on in life and are great so don’t worry about this.

Only women can do belly dancing.

Not true. When we think of belly dancers we do tend to think of sultry, seductive exotic women but men can do belly dancing too. For men who are thinking about taking up belly dancing here is a great DVD just for you.

Belly dancing is not a good workout

Of course it is!!!!!! When you try belly dancing you might not think that it is such a great workout but keep at it and you will notice the changes in your body. You should feel more strength, toned and flexible.

Find a local trainer if you can or if not then try a DVD, click here.
