Mixing Colors Using the Gimp
64What is The Gimp
The GIMP is a powerful digital image creator and editor. GIMP stands for GNU Image Manipulation Tool.
The Gimp offers most if not all of the same functions that Adobe Photoshop does, however unlike Photoshop, the Gimp is Free!
There are actually a number of different ways to make colors in the Gimp, but for the purposes of this tutorial, using HTML codes and getting colors from websites will be discussed.
This tutorial will show two ways to create colors in the Gimp.
Opening the “Change Foreground Color Dialog”
- Goto File and Select New, the size doesn't really matter for this tutorial, so you can just click 'OK.'
- Towards the middle of the Pallet there are two blocks of color (see image). Click on the top square, this will open up the "Change Foreround Color" dialog.
- From the "Change Foreground Color" dialog, you can create new colors.
Creating Colors From HTML Codes
HTML is a low level programming language used to talk to web browsers. Colors can be represented in several ways in HTML, one way is by using color codes. For a pretty detailed list of color codes, check out this chart. Although, there are a number of other charts available online.
To add a color based using a HTML Code:
- Find an HTML Color Code, like #153e7e , which is a dark blue.
- Open the "Change Foreground Color" Dialog.
- Copy and Paste the color code into the "HTML notation" text field and press enter, which selects the color. The # can be added, but is not necessary.
- Now, add the color to your Pallet by pressing the over arrow.
Using Colors From Your Computer or Other Web Pages
It is also possible to use a color from a web page or from your computer, by using the eyedropper.
- Click on the Eyedropper icon, which is next to the HTML notation text field.
- Now, click on a color that is on your screen. It can be on your desktop, an open program or a web page.
- Now, add the color to your Pallet by pressing the over arrow.
