Another month of big news

Well March has been another big month for mobile phones, alot of big shake ups and new details leaking out. I'm going to try and cover the big stories and possibly some that may prove important in the months to come.

Motorola cuts their losses

It's no secret that Motorola's mobile phone aspect has been trailing as of late, as one of the first handset manufacturers (I used to have a StarTAC back in the day) they enjoyed massive success, them along with Nokia. The trouble is that there are many more manufacturers these days such as LG, SonyEricsson and even Apple, all of which have taken the baton from Motorola and ran with it.

Some commentators have said that lack of innovation has been Motorolas problem, their RAZR phone line was impressive to start with and many fashion conscious consumers impressed by the ultra-light phone Motorola began regaining some of it's dominance of the market, which has recently been revealed to have slipped 60%.

The trouble is that now they are plagued with problems, CEOs being fired, handsets not being well received and this week: Their entire infrastructure has been torn in half. Their mobile phones division has been embarassing Motorola's image for a whilst now, well compared to their successful set top box division anyway. Now they are separating the two into two brands as to prevent any bad mojo from the mobile phones division bleeding into the lucrative STB division.

The World's Lightest Phone

Let's be honest, these days most mobile phones are competing for this award, however it's not one of the usual suspects that has won the coveted title!

A modular mobile phone called the "Modu" from an Israeli company of the same name hasentered the record books as the World's lightest mobile phone. Whilst the phone looks more like a domino brick it still has all the functions of a basic mobile phone, albeit with one major twist...

When the Modu was shown off at this year's Mobile World Conference in Barcelona the company were trying to introduce a new way of designing mobile phones, rather than cram a never ending list of features into a palm sized device they chose a number of different shells that the Modu slides into, some shells include a GPS shell, a camera shell and a MP3 player shell.

The aim behind the Modu is to make mobile phones one of the "invisible" items that we carry around with us everyday such as house keys and wristwatches. Many people complain that mobile phones are starting to bulk up a bit more these days, the hefty Nokia N95 being prime suspect. So hopefully the big name manufacturers will take a page out of Modu's book and get back to the "big is (not necessarilly) beautiful" mantra of the mobile phones world.
