Mobile Phones: Good VS Bad

I have a new toy. It has a sleek and classy design. It is small and compact and best of all, it's mine. I have a new mobile phone.

When mobile phones were first sold, they were bought solely for the purpose of contacting people and to be constantly contactable. Then they added the functions of sms and mms. Fast forward about 10 years and now we have the works, a mobile phone is no longer used primarily to call others, though yes sometimes we do use it to call our friends. Mobile phones are now used to surf the net, to take videos, photos, play games, do our work perhaps. Incidentally I wrote this article solely on my mobile for inspiration. Yes even the basic of calling people now comes with 3.5G; we can see the people we are talking to. Talk about a fast paced society and progression.

Owning a hand phone in the past was a luxury, now it has become a necessity. When we catch up with old friends, we no longer ask them, "What's your house number?" Instead we ask them for their mobile number and promise to "text" them soon. We can then store their numbers in our own mobile and there you have it, a new contact added.

Walk down the street and you can see plenty of people walking with their eyes glued on the object in their hand, with their fingers proficiently pressing the keypads on their mobile, well, some have even acquired the skill of texting without looking at the LCD screen of their mobile.

Then there are some who apparently had the impression that they needed to shout to get their point across. Have you ever encountered anyone having a conversation on their mobile so loud that you could actually know what the conversation is about? Think about manners, I say.

Mobile phones now come with plenty of accessories, one of them being the Bluetooth earpiece. I can understand perfectly if I see someone driving or riding wearing the earpiece. I can never understand though, why some people insist on going groceries shopping with that gadget hooked to their ear. Then they will happen to call someone and everyone in the store will know that they are buying strawberry milk instead of chocolate milk.

With all the many extended features of mobile phones now, costs of buying one has also increased and each time you decide to buy a particular phone, they come up with a better one, one with more functions or one that appeals to women. Yes, with greater functions comes greater price. Just how much are you willing to pay?

On the other hand, mobile phones are not that bad. They do help the business industry in many ways. Everyone has to own at least one mobile phone now. So since everyone has one, theirs have to be unique. That is when people come up with unique ringing tones and message tones. Then they "dress" up their mobile phones with stickers and stuff, just to make it personal. Some phones I have seen are really gorgeous.

Mobile phones can also serve a purpose. We fiddle with the phones to kill the boredom of waiting for the train or the boredom of attending lectures. We fiddle them again when we are at an awkward position, say attending a gathering and realising that you are left out. We need them in times of emergencies.

I can go on and on about mobile phones really. So what say you? Is owning a mobile phone good or bad for you? You decide and tell me.
