The phone rings, congratulations, your resume just got called back for an interview. Now resume has it's part, it's time for you to do yours. You rehearse possible interview questions with willing participants, you dress in your Sunday in hopes of impressing someone, and you arrive on time. However, with hard times crashing down upon the job market your resume, your answers, even your appearance isn't enough to get you an offer for employment. During these hard times the use of unconventional techniques have been called upon to assist with the process of weeding out the right candidate for the job. These unconventional techniques are four simple, over looked areas that in todays job market could make or break your future employment.
Your Car. Employers are now concerned about your car, of course I don't mean what make, model, year, or even how much it cost. What employers are concerned about are the condition it is in and the condition you keep it in. Hiring employers will go to great lengths to isolate cars of candidate's then send someone like a receptionist of front desk person to check out your care. What are they looking for? They want to know how neat and organized you keep your car, how clean your car is inside and out, how well maintained is car and if it still looks new. All these things matter to hiring employers because it is a wide spread belief that the appearance of a candidate's car can determine the character of a candidate.
The wait. Employers will deliberately make candidate's wait longer amounts of time in order to observe and study them. But how? There are no hidden cameras or spying from the ventilation system, the receptionist or front desk person does it. Some employers enlist the services of these front area workers to note the way a candidate acts during their wait and then at some point during the interview or after the interview they relay their observations to the hiring manager. What does this mean? It means that playing video games on your cell phone or down loading new ring tones while you wait is not the best way to spend your time while waiting for an interviewer. Such behavior will only sabotage your chances of getting the job. So what do you do while you wait? It is recommended you sit quietly, with proper posture. It is also a acceptable behavior to review your resume or any industrial material provided for you in the waiting area.
Gossip. Believe it or not gossip is a major error with the majority of interview. But it's not the kind of gossip that your think of. Senior hiring managers will assign other managers to conduct normal interviews during the process of screening candidate's. Then if called back the senior hiring manager will do a friendly interview with you and at some point drop a comment about the person who did your first interview. They will continue to ask your opinion on the comment dropped, if you give an opinion or defend the person the comment was about you are guilty of gossip. These candidate's who do get caught up within the comment dropped don't get hired. If this happens to you during a interview that it is suggested to simple dismiss the comment and move on, however, if you must say something respectfully decline to offer your opinion.
Eating. The breaking of bread is a time honored tradition. If you find yourself at an interview were you are enjoying a meal then the simplest eating habit could make or break your chances of being hired. Employers are now bringing in behavior food experts to poke and probe at your eating habits and various actions during the consumption of the meal. For example, a candidate went to a interview to which they had steak, the candidate cut his steak all up at once instead of one bite at a time. That candidate was passed over for the job he was interviewing for because by cutting his steak all at once he was found to be over eager and impatient. Observing the eating patterns of individuals is a commonly new method but it is very popular with corporate companies.
So here it is one more hurtle to overcome in the race to find employment. These are just four out of many new trends being exercised within the job market. They are subtle and non-detectable, however, the most important thing to remember is be yourself. You may not get the job but you can go home, look yourself in the mirror, and say at lease you tried...
