Modern Ford Explorer (2005+)

The modern day Ford Explorer, introduced for the 2005 model year, is an example of how far automobile design has come in just ten years. Completely different to, and much bigger than, the original Explorer, the current model is a tour de force of technological innovation, with such as electronic stability control listed as standard.

The engines may appear the same, but the 4.6 liter V8 in the current Explorer gives a fantastic 292bhp, this allowing for exemplary performance from this fine vehicle; it is no surprise that the car has been nominated for Truck of the Year. An interesting option, too, is the addition of powered running boards to enable access with greater ease.

Whereas sales of SUVs have fallen notably, perhaps due to the economic crisis and the public awareness of green issues, the Explorer continues to sell to this day in very respectable numbers. Those that want a car that makes a statement will need to look no further than the top of the range Limited version, which is the epitome of a luxury, high performance SUV.

There are many rivals on the market, but the Ford name, and the manner in which this car has established itself in the market place, make the Explorer less of a car and more of an icon. With excellent off-road handling, as well as being docile and easy to drive in town, the big Ford is no stranger to versatility, and sits well with any comparison.

The American passion for big, brash vehicles will transcend any market changes, and the concept car displayed by Ford as the idea for the next generation of Explorer is a step forward in SUV design. With more power form smaller, more efficient engines, this vehicle signifies the way the market has shifted since the original Explorer first hit the roads almost twenty years ago.

Doing Repairs On Your Ford Explorer

Running an old car like my Ford Explorer is fun, and doing all the work that needs to be done myself is part of the deal. I keep her running, and she sees me right.

The thing is, it saves me money, and I simply love tinkering with anything mechanical. I had to replace the condenser the other day – these things wear out over time – and the side mirrors were getting a bit worse for wear, too, and I got all the parts locally. I use the auto shops in town for the common parts, and places like Go-Part.com and the Ford dealers for the rest; all are more than willing to help.

With four up in the car I still get great performance out of my Explorer, but it’s important to keep her well maintained. Doing it all myself I know what’s been done, and when, and I can keep an eye on what may need doing soon.

It’s a great car, the Explorer, and it will remain a daily workhorse for as long as I keep her in trim; like I said, I see to her, and she sees to me!
