Moisture Wicking Clothing
73Moisture Wicking Clothes 101
Moisture wicking clothing is specially designed for use in any kind of outdoor or physical activity by using specially made synthetic fabrics that quickly draw sweat and moisture away from your body evaporating it quickly keeping you very cool, dry and comfortable. Even a good pair of moisture wicking socks will keep your feet dry and will prevent blisters.
If you are serious about sports or any kind of physical activity be it indoors in the gym or trudging the trails outdoors it's time to ditch the old cotton clothes and step up to a good set of moisture wicking gear. Once you do you will never go back!
When shopping make sure the product is clearly labelled as moisture wicking or check the label to verify the fabric does not contain cotton or any kind of cotton blend. Moisture wicking clothes are made from wool or synthetic materials like nylon, lycra, polyester or a blend of these fabrics.
A good set of moisture wicking clothes are generally not that expensive compared to regular name brand clothes. There are several brands of high performance and moisture wicking clothes to select from including Nike, North Face, Patagonia, and Underarmour. If you are on a budget your local big box store will have generic moisture wicking clothes.
For snow related sports like mountain climbing, snow shoeing, cross country or downhill skiing moisture wicking clothes are absolutely essential as the quick drying properties will keep your sweat soaked clothes from freezing on your body and making for an unpleasant and very cold experience that can cause hypothermia.
Build Layers
Its important to use layers when getting outfitted for outdoor adventures. For extreme cold, snowy or windy conditions it's best to start with a good base layer using a long sleeved moisture wicking shirt, fleece pullover and waterproof, but breathable, jacket. You should also get a good pair of thick wool or wool-synthetic blended moisture wicking socks. There is nothing worse then being on the slope and shivering since your sweat will get cold and can possibly even freeze.
For milder weather (ie non-freezing conditions) adjust your layers accordingly by switching to a short sleeve shirt, lose the jacket and go with a thinner pair of socks unless you plan to do some serious hiking then stick with the thick socks for added cushion and comfort.
It is important to use clothing layers for outdoor activities. For the gym rat you will probably want to go very lite weight to stay cool and comfortable so a simple moisture wicking shirt and shorts or warm up pants will usually be enough.

Thanks! Great hints here! Friends used to tell us to hike in shorts and tanks--uh--high altitude sunburns are not fun! Will check this out.
