If you are considering such a business, here are some of the first questions you must ask of yourself. How much money do I want to make? How much time and effort am I willing to give? Do I plan on working part time or full time? Am I willing and/or able to put some money into a business? How much money will/can I spend to get a business started? What do I want as a result of my effort? Can I do it?
Affiliate marketing is a means for you to earn money on the internet from a merchant. You CAN do it. I'll give you a very simple explanation of how it works. If you use this information wisely, it could lead to a very successful business.
You agree to provide the merchant with what he wants, a customer, and he agrees to pay you if the customer does what he wants. That agreement makes you an affiliate of that merchant. That's how you make money.
Some merchants want leads, some want sales, and others only want the customer to visit their website. The required customers activities are laid out in the terms of the agreement and are generally called "leads" or "sales".
You are assigned a unique ID that is displayed to the merchant so that the customer is "yours" when he visits the merchant website. If the customer, that you provide, meets the need of the merchant, lead or sale, then the merchant pays you money as a commission or a flat fee.
That money he pays you is an advertising expense for the merchant. Simple isn't it? I said simple, not necessarily easy. You see, the merchant may not pay a lot for each lead or sale, it can vary from a few cents to $50 or more. But, if you send enough customers, you can generate a lot of money for yourself.
The amount of money you make is dependant on the number of customers you send to the merchant and what they do when they get there. So, it's a numbers game. You decide what you want to make, then determine how many customers you must send to the merchant to achieve that goal.
There are rules and formula for you to use to determine how many customers you need to send to the merchant to make the money you want. Those rules and formulas are free and simple. By using those rules and formula you can determine if you are going to work part time or full time to achieve your goal.
But, how do you provide more customers to the merchant? You can provide more customers to the merchant, just as he does, by advertising.
You can try word of mouth. But, that has a very limited capacity and some people won't listen nor will they use your unique ID when visiting the merchants site.
You could try newspaper and radio advertising. That would broaden your potential customer base, but you are still limited by the base of the newspaper or radio station.
The greatest potential customer base is the internet. It is world wide and 24/7. If you use the internet to advertise you have the ultimate access to customers. If you want to succeed with affiliate marketing you must use the internet. That means you must have access to a computer and the internet.
The computer and the internet are primary tools for an affiliate marketing business. Two other primary tools, if you want a successful business, are creativity and good business building information and guidance. You can learn to develope your creative side. You will generally have to pay for good business building information and guidance. The nice thing about paying for it is that it is not expensive when you consider the "bang for your buck".
