Money Saving Tips for UK Residents

There are numerous ways to save money, most come down to common sense and determination.

Your house is probably the most expensive item that you will purchase and unless you are fortunate enough to be able to pay cash for your new home then you will be looking into financing a loan.

Ensure you hunt around for the best possible deal available. If you are paying your lender's full standard variable rate then you are probably paying out hundreds of pounds extra that you do not need to.

There are literally thousands of deals out there all jostling against each other to appear the best choice to you. If you can afford overpayments on your mortgage then this is a fast way to clear the debt.

One of the well-known ‘golden rules' of saving money is to clear your most expensive debts before any others. Credit cards fall into this category for most people, they are a convenient method of paying for items and for services. The problem is if you cannot afford the monthly payments in full and clear the balance each month , then the amount owing just creeps up and up due to the interest added. You might find that a low cost loan is more beneficial than a credit card.

Installing a water meter can save you money especially if you have a big household with numerous occupants, having a meter installed could cut your water bill in half.

Transfer your mobile phone over to ‘a pay as you go' phone; do you really require all those extra texts and minutes that come as part of your package? With the pay as you go option you are literally just paying for the calls as and when you make them.

Food shopping takes a significant portion of our money; the trick is to only purchase what you need and nothing else. This is the biggest fault in supermarkets, people end up spending more than they budgeted for due to buying items that they just fancy at the time. If you write a shopping list and adhere to it you will discover that your bill will stay fairly low. Try it as a personal challenge; do not buy anything other than those items written on your list. See how you do! Another good plan to save money when food shopping is to try some of the ‘own brand' tins and items. They are always cheaper than the known brands and generally taste just the same.

Do not buy designer label clothing; this can save you a small fortune in the long run. Do you really need those jeans to say ‘Levi' on them? A great place to shop for clothing is in markets and even second-hand shops as they usually sell good quality clothing and they are ridiculously cheap.

Try giving up smoking as it is very expensive as is drinking on a regular basis. Trips to the cinema and theatre are also very costly so minimize your visits. Consider them to be treats every once in awhile instead of a weekly event.

There are many more ways to save money just think carefully before you spend and consider your options.
