72Monitor speakers as the name clearly suggests, these are the speakers that are used for keeping the track of an electronic transmission and also to check the quality of the track. These are usually full range speakers and are multi-angled. The main purpose of the monitor speaker is to enable the performers to perceive the sound quality while performing. The performers can hear themselves as well as each other. They are different than the loudspeakers, which are simply designed to make electric signals audible for the listeners. The same tools may be used for both but the difference lies in their function. These speakers are usually connected with the computers through a wire or a wireless connection like infrared, Bluetooth and radio frequency. The other uses include playing movies, videos, music and sounds in other application programs. These are not your run of the mill MP3 speakers, or shall we say MP3 speakers portable enough to carry around.
An Approach to Monitor Speakers
There are many things that you should keep in mind before choosing monitor speakers. Firstly, the exact purpose should be known. You should make sure that the monitor speakers are properly balanced. The volume control should be designed in such a way that can be controlled both from the computer as well as their own volume controls for a much wider volume range. The equalization and mix can be configured according to your requirement.
Monitor with speakers come in a range of varieties and configurations. One type of monitor speaker is the stage wedge, which has a wedge-shaped area that can be set on the floor of the performance area with the speaker aligned towards the performer. These are often referred to as side-fill monitors, when their placement is towards the side of the stage. In-ear monitors are another category comprising of earphones with either wire or wireless transmission. These are mostly used by musicians to help them hear the other performers and keeping the sound from leaking. Studio monitors, also popularly known as reference monitors, are a type of digital monitor speakers used as an essential element of recording studio setup. Their main purpose is to help creating a mix by understanding the unrefined quality of the sounds accurately. A near field monitor, which is a studio monitor, can be used to remove the effects of the room by placing it near to the performers. Active monitor speakers enclosed in a CAD cabinet ensures an improved sound image and a perfect response.
There are mono monitor speakers with a single audio output and two-channel monitor speakers comprising of a left and right speaker. The difference between the two is that the mono monitor speakers play sound from a central area giving little depth to the sound whereas the two channel monitor speakers allows the sound frequency from both the sides. Then there is another category called surround sound monitor speakers. These monitor audio speakers comprise of five to seven speakers and they are mainly used for listening to orchestra recordings or home theatres.
Using the Monitor Speakers in a Better Way
The main use of the monitor speakers is to get the sound appropriately to the listeners or a particular performer’s ears. Therefore the positioning of the speakers should be accurate. One way to maximize positioning possibilities is to get a 5.1 speaker system. The positioning and equalization of the monitor speakers play a major role in the output quality. If microphones are being used then the positioning of the microphones and monitor speakers should be done in such a way so that the microphone is pointing directly away from the monitor speakers. This will enhance the sensitivity of the microphone and will also give the monitor quite a few extra decibels of some feedback rejection.
Sometimes a common problem arises due to reflection of sound where the sound gets reflected from nearby surfaces into the vocal microphone. This can be avoided by keeping the performer away from walls or other surfaces. If feedback occurs in a monitor speaker, you can check the microphone with the highest gain particularly the one which is nearest to it. Repositioning can be a more effective option then equalization. In case repositioning does not work or if the performer moves around on stage, equalization is the only option you can have. An important fact to be taken care is that when more than one monitor speakers are used on a single amplifier channel, all of them must be of the same type. You should also make sure you speakers are secured properly. To do this make sure you get some reasonable speaker stands, preferable speaker stands cheap enough for your budget, as they can get quite expensive.
In the modern production environments, monitor speakers are capable of delivering a good performance and quality that you can rely on. You can get an extended frequency range and high dynamics with minimum distortions. These are more essential than many people realize because for a successful performance the musicians need to hear themselves as well as each other consistently and clearly. Speakers with rough frequency response and a poor pattern control are more problematic than their worth. Hence, it is better to choose a good quality monitor speaker to avoid any future trouble. The ultra modern places have wall mount speakers set up already installed (klipsch in wall speakers are quite good for this purpose).
