Monkey Balls

Right. I know the name is ridiculous. Back when I was in college a friend of mine offered me some monkey balls. I politely declined. She insisted. I finally asked, "What are they?"

"Oh," she answered, "they are these really yummy butterscotch cinnamon rolls. And after you bake them, they look like a bunch of things huddled together into a big ball. So my family always called them Monkey Balls."

Whatever you call them, these are simple to make and delicious to eat. Let's get started--

Ingredient List

  1.  2 dozen frozen Rhodes rolls
  2. 1 box butterscotch pudding (cook & serve box)
  3. 1 tsp cinnamon
  4. 1/2 cup butter
  5. 1/2 cup brown sugar

Start Making the Monkey Ball

First, it is very important that you start these the night before.  Or, if you are making them for a night snack--start them about 10 hours before you are going to cook them.

  1. Get a bundt pan and grease it really good.  I use Pam spray
  2. Place the 24 frozen rols in the pan
  3. Pour the butterscotch (powder) on top of the frozen rolls.  Just use the powder right out of the box
  4. Melt the butter and brown sugar together (I do it in the microwave) and then pour this over the rolls.
  5. Sprinkle the cinnamon over the rolls.
  6. Let it rise overnight.  I just set them in the oven overnight.  You may want to place a cookie sheet underneath the bundt pan because sometimes the rolls rise so much they push a little of the butter or sugar out.
  7. Don't cover your bundt pan with anything.
  8. In the morning, cook them for 30 minutes at 350 degrees.
  9. Take them out of the oven and flip the bundt pan over.  Be careful not to burn yourself with any of the hot butter/sugar/butterscotch.  Then pull the pan off.
  10. Voila'  You have a delicious breakfast all hot and ready to eat.

Looks too yummy for words. Though we don't have things like Rhodes rolls or Bundt pans here - will ordinary frozen bread rolls do? Would love to try these.

Love and peace

tonymac04, I am sure any frozen bread roll would work just fine. And as to the bundt pan, you can use an angel food cake pan or probably just about any deep pan that you can put in the oven. They are good, give them a try and let me know what you think.

I know--the name got me too. I guess it comes from the fact that at some point someone said, "that looks like a bunch of monkeys all tangled together into a ball". And that is all she wrote. The name stuck

These look good--especially considering they have butterscotch pudding. I am tempted to try them indeed.

They look wonderful. I came here because we always called those little round pointy things that fall off gum trees and I thought 'you can eat them?' haha

lots of variations available - i make one called "monkey bread" - same technique but no butterscotch, can't wait to try these. if no bundt or angel food pan available use a high-sided cassrole dish and put a baking bowl in the middle - it's just a matter of cooking from within as well as the outside at the same time. my monkey bread works well for any type of frozen bread dough - even and especially the old cheap frozen biscuits, i bet it would work here as well - just get one with a high sweetner content.
