Monorail Systems - Disney Parks

Both Disneyland Parks in the U.S.A. have monorail systems in operation. The first was, of course, at the original Disneyland, in Anaheim, California. It was dedicated on Mar 2, 1959. It opened for operation on June 14, 1959 as a sightseeing attraction in Tomorrowland in Disneyland.

The Disneyland Monorail has two stations: one in Tomorrowland, and another in the Downtown Disney district. The original Monorail was a round trip ride with no stops. In 1961, the track was expanded to connect to a station at the Disneyland Hotel, making it an actual transportation system. The original Hotel station underwent extensive remodeling during construction of the Downtown Disney district, while still retaining much of its original footprint. It is now referred to as Downtown Disney Station, located next to the Rainforest Cafe. All riders must disembark at Tomorrowland Station.

The monorail at Disney World is much more extensive. The Walt Disney World Monorail System is an actual public transit system in operation around Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

One of the most famous symbols of Walt Disney World, the original Mark IV monorail was designed in California and assembled in Florida by the Martin Marietta Corporation. The new Mark VI monorails were built by Bombardier and the first of the twelve new trains (Monorail Blue) arrived to Disney property on June 8, 1989 and was installed shortly after. The Walt Disney World Resort is currently operating twelve Mark VI trains.
