Signs of the Moon

I grew up in a farming community where there was much discussion about when to plant what crops. Every one had a Farmer Almanac and referred to it religiously, discussing it often. I've lost tract of a place to purchase the book, but learn to read the signs the American Indian way. If the horns point up, it's a good time to plant above ground crops , like corn. If it points down it's a good time to plant below ground crops, like potatoes. I hope it's right. I just planted some more rhubarb, an extremely versatile herb with a very poisonous leaf, but an excellent stock. It can be used in wine or with brown sugar and flour an excellent desert. Mostly it's used to substitute a fruit recipe, since it will absorb to flavor of anything it's mixed in with.

I have some horse radish plants I need to move, so I will wait until the moon's horns point down, but it should be a good time to move my asparagus bed. I'll keep you posted on how they grow.

During the waning of the moon, the period following the full moon, it is thought that this is the time to remove all unwanted plants. This in farmers terms is time for weeding. It is believed that weeds removed during this lunar phase will not return. I have heard stories of some farmers that tried to remove their wives during this phase. One story tells of an old farmer that sent his wife to her mother's during this phase and she never returned. Further investigation proved, she met up with an old boy friend and a divorce soon followed. So be careful where you send your friends during this period.
