Moonlight tv show
Moonlight is a new tv show on CBS, airing on Friday nights at 9 p.m. between Ghost Whisperers and Numb3rs. It's pilot episode was thoroughly slammed in the media, and quite frankly, I didn't care much for it myself, but since I love vampires I was willing to give the show a chance to improve and I'm happy I stuck it out. To date, four episodes have aired and each one has improved on the previous significantly. So if you took a look at this show initially and thought Eh, it may be time for a revisit.
Mick St. John
Mick St. John is our vampire protagonist, wonderfully played by Australian actor Alex O'Loughlin, who makes up for many shortcomings in the writing with his excellent acting and wonderfully expressive face. While Mick has plenty to brood about since he considers himself a monster and unworthy of his favorite human and potential love interest, Beth, he's actually charming and funny and smiles a great deal. O'Loughlin has created a really appealing persona and I adore this character.
Most of O'Loughlin's previous work is in Australian film, so he's probably unfamiliar to most of the US audience, but he did appear in six episodes of The Shield last season and did a great job there as well in a criminally under-written part.

Another Vampire Detective
For television writers, vampires and private eyes must go together like peanut butter and chocolate since Moonlight is the third vampire show to feature a vampire as a private detective -- starting with Forever Knight, featuring tortured guilty blood-sucker Nick Knight; Angel, featuring another tortured brooding blood-sucker named Angel; and now we have Mick St. John, who thankfully is a lot less tortured and brooding than the other two, but he has his own melancholy and again, he's a vampire who refuses to prey directly on humans. He gets his blood from the blood bank. Shall we discuss the ethics of stealing? *g*
The the genre confluence between vampire and detectives makes a certain amount of sense. In the P.I. genre, private investigators spend a lot of time on their own working with the seedier side of life and the noir aspects of the genre lends itself to a lot of night-time shoots, which is perfect for vampires because they tend to have problems with the pesky daylight.
Beth and Mick
Beth Turner
Beth Turner is played by British actress Sophia Myles. She's a likeable, curious journalist that Mick has been keeping an eye on without her knowledge ever since he rescued her from another vampire -- his ex-wife! -- when she was a child. But now they've met and in less than two episodes she's managed to discover that he's a vampire. Sophia and Alex have great chemistry. Sophia's additional film credits include "From Hell," "Mansfield Park," "Underworld," "Tristan and Isolde," "Thunderbirds" and "Art School Confidential."
Coraline
Coraline is Mick's ex-wife. She's the vampire who turned him into a vampire without checking in to see if he wanted that first. Things did not go well. Played by Shannyn Sossamon, Coraline has, so far, only appeared in flashbacks, but you can expect a contemporary appeance sometime soon and I'm sure it will liven things up considerably. Not only did she turn Mick into a vampire against his will, but she also kidnapped Beth when she was a little girl and would have turned her into a vamp too if Mick hadn't rescued her.
Shannyn has also appeared in "40 Days and 40 Nights," "The Order," "A Knight's Tale," "The Rules of Attraction," "The Holiday," "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," "Chasing Ghosts" and "Undiscovered.
Josef
Josef is Mick's best friend. He's also a 400+ years old vampire. He doesn't share Mick's scruples about drinking blood either. It's straight from the vein for Josef. He's played by Jason Dohring, who just came off a three year stint on the tv show, Veronica Mars.
I personally think the actor is far too contemporary looking in appearance to be playing a vampire of that age, but thankfully we haven't seen him in any flashbacks further back than the 80s. I think as long as they stick to the 20th century, we'll be fine. I was never a fan of Veronica Mars so I wasn't familiar with him before Moonlight, but he's definitely won me over.
Moonlight's Vampire Mythology
Moonlight is treading new ground with its vampire mythology, so its vampires can actually go out during the daylight without exploding or finding themselves set on fire, but the daylight is still bad for them and in the fourth episode of Moonlight, titled Fever, Mick nearly dies from his own over-exposure to the sun in the blindingly sunny and hot California desert.
The following photos are from the episode, Fever, as Mick tries to combat the effects of sunlight by climbing into a tub in a skanky deserted motel in the desert.
Vampire Aesthetics
As part of the new vampire mythology, the creators of Moonlight have come up with a completely different look for their vampires in vampface. It is subtle and sexy, eerie rather than repulsive and off-putting. The best thing about it, I think, is the whited out eyes. They still allow the actors to express emotions with their eyes which is really huge in terms of emotional connection with the characters. I imagine too that the subtle changes in appearance make for far less time in the make-up chair.

I don't care what critics are saying. I have fallen head over gaga for Mick St John. I would stick my neck out for him in a split second. Oh, and I am O+. I think that Alex O'Loughlin is the hottest actor ever on TV and I would give my eye-teeth to meet him in person.
I agree with both of you 100% Mick/Alex are the sexiest damn vampire and actor around. I really hope the writer's strike doesn't hurt the show because I will be very unhappy if I can't get my vampire fix!

I guess I'm one of the few that saw Moonlight's promise in the very first episode..I loved it. Great show. Fine cast wonderful storylines. Becoming very intense and gripping. Your site is nice and I will be visiting. Keep all of the positive light on Moonlight. You're doing a fntastic job.

OK, I love moonlight, but I especially love Alex O'loughlin. He really make this show a heart stopper. You can really feel the emotion in this show.....besides, I am not the only one in the house that loves this show....my husband and kids watch the show faithfully.

This show is great. It has humor, romance, and action. I am sad to say I have missed some episodes. I want to watch it online, but am only able to watch 4 of them. WHY? How can I catch up and see the others? Vic

I LOVE Moonlight. But this is the second Friday night in a row that it has been pre-empted by some special or other. Use something else!! I miss this great show and always look forward to it.

Great article, and definitely a plus on the sexy pictures of him. :P ;) I enjoy watching Moonlight, though I'm not a huge fan (yet), and it's nice to read a general summary of it and look at some stills.
I've never written about a show before - but this is such a great story line and Alex/Mick is so tremendous in this role. Does anyone know if this show will survive the season or has it been cancelled?

I have to say I am somewhat relieved to see how many people are saying they have never gotten this way over a show before. I haven't either... but I am so gaga over this show, this character, and especially this leading man I am actually kinda worried about it! It makes me feel better to see I am not alone!
I sure hope CBS know what they have got here and don't let it go!
Also - agree with the other comments that they are not giving the show a fair shot by pre-empting it like they have. They aren't advertising it all that well either.

I actually really like the show to and am glad to see that is has steadily improved from the pilot.
I didn't see this coming! I totally thought Mick would turn Josh. And next weeks episode...Mick St. John turns human??? How exciting that the show is nominated for a People's Choice! I was actually watching a the 1st show that never aired and it was a different Beth. A good decision was made by choosing Sophia Myles. Can't wait until next week.

Hey Everyone! I LOVE MOONLIGHT!!! I watch the show every Friday (seen it since the beginning). I even have Moonlight wallpaper on my computer. Quick question though, does anyone know the title and artist of the song that played at the beginning of the final Moonlight episode, The Mortal Cure? It's the song that was playing when Beth entered the police station, and had flashbacks of the day Josh was killed. Love the music from the show, but I don't know who sings that particular song. Great song that played towards the end of the episode also. The one by OneRepublic called, "All Fall Down". Thanks in advance to whoever can answer this question for me. : )

I knew this was going to be a terrific show when the local TV critic in the Seattle PI panned it...she's leaving, which makes me sad, because I could always tell what shows I'd like or not by her opinion...always the opposite of what I thought. Anyway, add my opinion to the others that it's a good show, which often means that the network morons will cancel it ;-(

I Love Mick and I am afraid you are gonna have to share him as your new TV boyfriend, Embitca. I am dying to know if there are any episodes left "in the can" and if they are going to air them. I too love some of the music I am hearing on the show and would love to know where to find some of the artists.

Moonlight has not been canceled. They are fliming as I type, and the next four episodes will air begining: April 25th in the normal time slot. That said, CBS has continued to reiterate that they will decide on season 2 based on the number of viewers over these next four episodes. Looking at what happened with Jericho's return tanking, I can understand their desire to hold back at the moment. I just hope enough people watch to convince them the show is worth saving: as we all know.
One of my favorite things about these actors/actresses is their ability to act not only with their voice and facial expressions, but they act with their whole body and soul. They allow me to disconnect from reality and believe in thier character and their world while they are joining me in my living room Friday nights. I am picky about the calaber of actors and actresses, and these guy do a great job of meeting and exceeding expectations.
If anyone who reads these is interested, there is a website that keeps updated on all things Moonlight, including music lyrics, art, fanfic, and just about anything you might be curious about regarding Moonlight. If you are interested, just follow the url link and click on the message board link at the top of the web page. There's also a live chat every night an episode airs through that website (just a bit further down on the first page, on the right hand side). I am only a member, not the owner or a moderator. I just enjoy interacting wtih all these people who love Moonlight from all over the world, and thought a few of you might like to also.

Although Mick St John is not the first vampire/PI you do have to admit that he is definately the sexiest. The scene of him a Beth in the shower after she took "the drug" was G rated but incredibly hot.
I hope that Moonlight get a long run, as it makes my Friday night's special.
