Moonrise, moonset

By Elena.

Those who know Elena are familiar with her sunrise and sunset photos. Elena gets quite a bit of praise for those shots, although she always said that her only merit is being there at the right time to capture the scene. Elena thinks the same can be said about her moon photos, being there and thinking of grabbing the camera is what she can be proud of.

However, Elena feels rather proud today, because last night she purposefully set out to catch an event that's only witnessed once or at most twice a year from where she lives, a full moonrise. Elena's heart goes pitter patter just remembering the first time in her life where she witnessed such a wonder, she still remembers being somewhat puzzled at the orange "bulk" that appeared over the horizon.

Elena was somewhat alarmed at the time. Was it a fire? An explosion? A concert with a lot of watt power? Whatever could this thing be? But the alarm and puzzlement only lasted a minute, because the speed at which the moon rises is just as quick as the sunrise, it's over in a flash.

The same can be said about the moon setting, it's just as speedy, the Earth does quick work of spinning round and covering the last vestiges of the sun, or the moon. As soon as either touches the ground, they are gone in two minutes, quite literally. A moonset is only witnessed once or twice a year from Elena's whereabouts, and one has to be lucky that it is a full moonset when it happens.

Elena wasn't that lucky this year, it was a crescent moonset. Nonetheless, it was breathtaking, and it happened two nights in a row, July 25th and 26th.

The images below are best seen in presentation format, because the progress of the moon over the horizon is very obvious with that format. Elena can't provide the slideshow here, but she still hopes the images speak for themselves.

You did a great job capturing the moon, Elena! It must have taken a great deal of patience to do so. Thanks for sharing this.

Elena: You did a cool job capturing the moon! Its so amazing to be in the West Coast in the a.m. and looking at photos of the moon in Spain- we all truly share this little planet.

Thanks for sharing a peek into your side of the fence!

Patience and a steady hand, dohn :-) And attention, as I have to admit Elena's mind wandered while watching this show :D

Violet, we do share the planet, and the planet is kind enough to share with us, right? :-)

JOAT -- Merci, madame, je suis tres happy that you like them!

J needs to come to Spain in the summer (or, errr, the equinoxes, Elena Thinks) to get a gander of this unusual event. Once she's here, J needs to avail herself of a lookout. Elena's terrace offers economic package deals. Ahem.

Thank you, Ethel!

Raven, muy bien with that Spanish! La luna es muy bonita indeed :)

Linda, I'm glad you enjoyed the photos! I'm blushing a bit at the rest of your comment, though, because I'm quite sure I don't do everything well -- perhaps my talent lies in sharing only what I think I did well? How about that? Laugh! On the third person, I'm thrilled you mention it. I don't think we've seen the last of Elena's third person potential here at Hubpages yet :-) Besos to you!

Suiiki -- Thank you! On behalf of the moon, of course ;-)

Randy, as lovely as you are, you hipster you!

Francia, I'm so glad you liked the show :-) A moon rising is indeed an amazing performance, as I said, it makes my heart go pitter patter. Ahhhhh.

Sensational, Elena! The cloud bands across the full moon...while the pictures are magnificent, the real life view must have been completely thrilling. Not to mention that crescent moon hanging there like a ripe banana waiting to be plucked from the sky. Wow!
