Moose Heads and the Taxidermy of the World’s Largest Trophies
74The thrill of bagging a large moose trophy in Alaska is the holy grail of many hunters. The time spent in the wild hunting some of natures finest animals cannot be compared to anything else in the world. Be prepared for the rough weather though, and bring your wool socks. It will cost a lot to have your trophy mounted by a quality taxidermist, but if you do it right you will be able to enjoy your trophy for generations.

The Boar
Wild boar is some of the most exciting hunting to be offered in the US. They are wily, and dangerous, and the acquisition of a superior specimen should defiantly be immortalized. Insist the tusks stay real in the head mounting, and if you must pay extra to ensure this. Synthetic tusks never do look right in a mounting, and can spoil an otherwise perfect display on a fine boar.
The White Tail and Other Deer
Some of these guys have exquisite antlers, and I think they look better on the buck than on simply a mounted piece. I wouldn’t go to the cost of mounting a mediocre display, but a spectacular specimen, I would defiantly preserve. Some Mule deer mountings can look nice as well as the ears and soft eyes give the piece nice depth. These deer are relatively easy to acquire, so keep hunting and you will find the specimen worth mounting.
The Bull Elk
Nothing in the hunting world is as rewarding as the fall you breathlessly watch two bull elk come to blows over a herd of cows. They bugle, and pose, and dance their structured routine, and if the timing is right, they go for the throat. No holds barred, as the earth quakes two of God’s mighty titans prove to the world that outside of Wall Street we are not the apex predator. Not really fit to fire at that moment, but you will get a chance when you have skillfully called one in and deserve that trophy. Mount it when you do, if nothing else you will feel smaller every time you look at it.
The Exotic Mammal
If you buy one on the internet and have never seen a zebra in real life, you are a cheater and shame alone dictates you not display that piece. If you have actually gone to Africa and hunted on safari with game wardens, display with pride. Take care; African tanning is not what it is here.
