More 80's Kids Toys- Popples!!!

This past weekend I spent my time converting old home movies onto my PC. I came across one home video titles 'Christmas 1986'.

I've watched this home video time and time again, this time though I paid more attention to my surroundings than I did my moms fluffy mullet, or the fact that my dad had a full head of hair.

This time around I looked around at my environment. The living room, my bedroom, and of course gifts me and my kid brother were opening in a 10 minute segment in the video.

I noticed all of those delightful 80's toys that I wish would hurry up and make a comeback. One of the toys under the Christmas tree in 1986 was Popples.

A week or so ago I wrote a quick piece of Nosey Bears! Unfortunately not all too many people can recall Nosey Bears. I thought these bears were hellacool, but I guess I was a small handful of kids who collected Nosey Bears.

Popples on the other hand...everyone should remember Popples!!!

Popples were some sort of bear creatures that were stuffed. What was so cool and unique about Popples though were that you could shove their entire body into themselves.

All Popples came with a little sewed on pouch on their backs. With a little handy work you could shove that whole damn bear into it's pouch and toss it around like a ball.

Sort of like a 2 in 1 toy.

Popples (unlike Nosey Bears) made an attempt to resurrect in the year 2007 with a newly modified look. Frankly the new look didn't catch on with me, as they seemed to lack that adorable flair the originals had in the 80's.

The new Popples are similar in a way, but their heads are much larger than the originals and don't have that 'it' factor the way they did in the 80's.

If I were to spot this new Popple sitting on a shelf, I honestly would walk right by and not even recognize the resurrection.

Anyhow, back to the home movie...

I watched my 5 year old self open 2 gifts; one directly after another. One gift contained a large orange Popple with fuzzy neon green hair, the other was a smaller sized purple Popple with fuzzy pink hair.

After seeing how happy I was in the old home movie, I got to thinking about the death of my 2 dearest pals. My popples.

About a month after receiving them, our good ole hound Kasper murdered both of them.

My quest to finding my Popples led me to Ebay, where I was able to locate one of them. My orange Popple will be arriving in about a week.

I'm pretty excited.

What amazed me though most of all was seeing the new version of Popples being sold with all of these new advancements. My how they have evolved! Some of them talk, and some allow you to record messages that will replay.

I like my original non-complex Popple better though. It gave us kids room to use our own imaginations.

never heard of popples before. what i do remember were my RCs and other battery operated toy cars that chase each other on the blue tracks which you have to assemble yourself - and it came with fences, too! and of course the bots that looked boxy and had chistmas light eyes and armor but could walk and turn their heads :D

I also never heard of poppies, but now, due to your article, I have been enlightened. Perhaps it is an age related thing. Ha!

They were the bomb when I was like 5. People traded them like they were cards. : )

I remember and love popples, although I got rid of all my old ones. One thing I was sad about is to see the new strawberry shortcake dolls are just not as cute as the ones I owned back in the eighties. Oh well, called me nostaligic, but I think sometimes the resurrected products are just not as great as the original mccoy.

Never heard of Popples. That was before my time....or do I mean after? Nope, in my day we played with bottle caps and WE LIKED IT! And they were the kind you had to open with an opener. Really though, the ressurected stuff is never as good as the original, at least not often.

Thanks for an interesting article. Although I have never heard of popples, Mary Popples was my favorite movie.

SweetiePie--- the new strawberry shortcake dolls were being called strawberry slutcake in the media when they first unveiled the new look!!! I agree, I wouldnt go as far as calling em Strawberry Slutcake, but they are just not as cute as they were when we were kids.

Anna Marie- we had the sheets too. lol.

Christoper- we had pogs. close to bottle caps, but they were cardboard junk that the kids went wild over. lol.

Golden.... lol, you always manage to make me laugh. ; )

Aj- I plan on posting a pic. : ) I hope its not a grimy looking popple though. lol

I loved my popple! My brother and I each had one and would put them into their pouches and toss them back and forth up and down the stairs. Good memories!!
