More free resources for writers

This is a follow up to my previous hub Free Resources for Writers. I felt I had to write a sequel as I keep coming across fantastic free ebooks, newsletters, websites and offers for writers. I also keep coming across ads offering to sell you very expensive ebooks and writing courses that will miraculously turn you into a successful freelance writer. I don't want to imply there aren't great resources out there that you have to pay for. I've bought both print books and ebooks on writing that have been helpful, and taken paid writing courses that have improved my writing and helped me learn about the industry. However, if you're trying to make money from writing you may not have a lot of money to invest, so this hub is about finding the resources you need to get started or progress in your writing career without laying out a single cent.

WritersWrite.com. Describing itself as "Your one-stop resource for information about books, writing and publishing", this site covers everything from children's writing to self-publishing to songwriting. There's a book blog and writers blog, plus book giveaways and useful sections such as The Write Jobs, The Write News and Events Guide, plus of course, you can subscribe to a couple of free writers' newsletters.

WritingForDollars.com. Sign up for a free award winning newsletter, search a range of articles about various aspects of making money from freelance writing, or trawl through an extensive database of paying writers markets. If you subscribe to their newsletter you also get a free ebook, 83 Ways to Make Money Writing.

WriteFromHome.com Aimed specifically at parents who want to make money freelance writing from home (their strapline is Managing Kids and Clips Under One Roof), this is a good resource for any writer. Lots of articles on writing and freelance business issues, such as tax information for freelancers. You can download a free mini e-course on the home page Writing for Profit: Break into Magazines.

AbsoluteWrite.com.Interesting resources for all types of writers. A listing of writers' markets and lots of little bonuses. For example, when I checked in just before writing this article their home page was showing a 45 minute video from the O'Reilly 2009 Tools of Change for Publishing Conference, featuring three industry insiders from the world of e-publishing.

WritersWeekly.com. Subscribe to what claims to be The Highest Circulation Writing Ezine in the World, and take a look at a ton of useful writing related articles. There are a couple of interesting features I like about this site. The Warnings section, that records and publicizes possible scams in the writing/publishing industry, and the fact that if you have written or, as in my case, would like to write your own ebook you can list it for sale through the site for free (no set-up fees). If you are interested in writing an ebook but don't know where to start, there are also some useful articles on the whole process on this site.

WorldwideFreelance.com. Lots of information, a free weekly newsletter plus a free report, 25 writing markets that pay 20 cents a word, when you subscribe. You'll have to pay for their premium searchable markets database of well over 2,000 paying markets, but there's also a free version with around 750 markets, which should keep you going for a while!

GetFreeBooks.com. You can download the LegendsFire's Writers Guide Free Ebook at this link. Then scroll down the page for links to a host of free ebooks and reports including 19 free self-improvement ebooks, the top 100 free ebooks for business students and entrepreneurs, and Success in the Arts: What it takes to Make it in Creative Fields.

Write4Kids.com. If you write for children, or think you might want to, this is a site worth checking out. Sign up for free e-letter and get a free ebook, How To Write Great Picture Books, or scoll to the bottom of the sign up page and download more free ebooks – The Art of Writing by Robert Louis Stevenson, The Best of Children's Writing Update, and The Non-Celebrity’s Guide to getting A Children’s Book Published.

A word of warning: If you're anything like me you'll soon end up with an inbox full of ezines and a hard drive full of ebooks. I have a separate folder in my email inbox to store writing newsletters and set aside some time each week to go through them, check out markets and save/bookmark relevant links. I give every new ezine/newsletter a chance to impress me, but if, after several issues, I find it doesn't address my writing needs I unsubscribe. I've never had problems unsubscribing from a writing newsletter or with sites sharing my details (always check that they at least claim that they don't do this). I get surprsingly little spam bearing in mind how many times I've given my email address out to these types of sites.

I also spend time weeding out ebooks that don't meet my needs (and backing up those that do in case of computer crashes). As with anything, the more information you collect the better organized you have to be to get the most out of it.

Please feel free to check out the prequel to this hub, Free resources for writers.

If you want to invest a little money in your writing (or are determined to make the most of free resources and are planning a trip to the library) you might also like 10 great books for writers. If you know of a genuine writing-related freebie that others might find useful, please share in the comments.

I'm glad you both like the list. So many fellow writers have helped me progress with my writng over the years, so I love to share resources I find with others who might find them helpful. And it's great that the Hubpages community allows me to do that.

Handy tips and olinks - thanks. Just one warning - the freeware at FictionFactor comes up as an attack site according to Norton, so maybe not a good idea to promote it?

Love and peace

Tony

Thanks for the warning Tony. I've downloaded free reports from FictionFactor with no problems, but not used the freeware. I've deleted that site from the list now, which is a shame as they had some good stuff, and it may be the freeware that's potentially dangerous rather than the site, but better safe than sorry. Thanks for the tip.
