Part II Choosing Content

In our other post we talked about content. Referring to my current web page Tips for Camping (you will need to go to the page to follow along) I added a tier two page called TENT REVIEWS, which is more content. We chose to do the TENT REVIEW page by looking at the data that was recorded by our traffic-tracking tool. We noticed that a large number of people were searching for tents, shelters and reviews so we decided to give them what they wanted and test this page. This page has been online since December 1st and our overall website daily visitors have increased by approximately 10% however our unique visitors has increased slightly less than that (approx. 8%) which shows us that we have more returning traffic.

My master key word was TENT. My other key words were camping, gifts, campers and reviews. If you will look at the page you will see that all the key words are in the title or first paragraph of the page. This gives my page higher ranking on Google and the other search engines You will also notice that we have very few Adsense ads on this page compared to our others. This is by design because we want our products page to take precedence over the click through links on this page. What we give up on clicks we more than make up on Amazon sales.

Other things you need to notice about our site. We don’t give all the information. We give just enough that readers will click on our ads to find more about camping stuff like features, dimensions, price, and other reviews. At the bottom of our page you will notice that we have added social links. This allows visitors to share our site and information through their social networks online.

I believe one key to a high traffic website is attracting and keeping visitors. That is why I track total unique visits and total visits. You are attracting repeat visitors when the unique visit number is smaller that the total visit number. The more repeat visitors you have, the more likely that repeat visitor will turn into a customer. I continue to add content or edit my pages weekly. We add more information or update information. We check links because there is nothing worse on a website than a broken link. When we edit our site, it alerts the search engines and they then know that we have a very active site. You have to get noticed by the search engines if you want any traffic at all. I choose not to pay for traffic so I have to update and stay active on my site. I hope that I have not confused you here.

I build my site in a block-by-block technique using Site Build IT! because it provides everything I need as a novice. It is worth looking into if you want to build a website, don’t know much about html and need to have a full bag of tools at your disposal.

You can also use a web designer to do all of this for you then find a web master to host the site. We didn’t have the money to do that so we took another route. I am in no way, a professional web designer nor do I pretend to be one. All I know is that this works for me and I’m having a blast producing my own website and making a little money to boot.

Thanks for indulging me. DrJim
