More stupid questions people ask twins
70In one of my last posts, I wrote about some of the stupidest questions that people ask when come face to face with a pair of twins. I went back to the Facebook group and checked out more funnies for your enjoyment.
Why are you not dressed alike? Ok, people, dressing alike looks really cute when twins are small. Why would adults do that? The last time I remember that my sister and I dressed alike was for our sister Janet's wedding. We were 17 and we had the "duty" of being bridesmaids. Eugh. I don't deny that there are probably twins out there who get a kick out of confusing everybody and being TWIN in everything, but, no, most twins will probably tell you they'd rather dressed in whatever they want to instead of being a mirror image of their sibling.
Do you both have the same name? Chances are that you'll meet twins who have at least one name that is the same. Examples: Mary Kate and Mary Elise, Joseph John and Joseph Peter. Or names that rhyme like Sara and Tara. It is a custom that a lot of parents share, and this not only go with twins. My ex-boyfriend's aunt named all of her four daughters Maria. The middle names were the only way to distinguish them. Oi. (And no, thankfully my sister and I both have different names. Hallelujah!)
Were you in the same class in school? Yes, people do ask this question. Again, depending on the school, country and a number of circumstances, twins may be together in class or not. My sister and I went to kinder and 1st grade together. 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 7th we were apart. 4th, 5th, and from 8th all the way to high school we were together. Psychologists advise for parents to put the kids in different classes. I have to say I agree with this, at least in the primary school. You learn to deal with things as an individual. But again, this would be a matter of opinion and preferences.
Can your parents tell the difference? Yes, people ask this question as well. I think is one of the first few questions I usually get asked. In my particular case, yes they can. My parents would only get confused if they are not paying close attention. Parents do a lot of tricks and handy stuff to tell their kids apart people. The same goes with any other siblings in the household. The external family like cousins, uncles, aunts, grandparents, etc. is another story and it varies from family to family.
Another question is if twins run in the family. In the past, this was a valid question, since twins were rare. Today though, with so many fertility drugs being used and the in-vitro procedures, more women are prone to have twins than before. But still, people ask. Basically, if no drugs were used to enhance pregnancy, chances are that twins run in the family. It could be on either side. In our case, it seems it comes on my mom's side. She once said she had aunts that were twins, and a first cousin of ours from our mom's side had twins. I had this friend in school, she had a twin brother (fraternal for those who don't know!) and she told us their father was a twin as well.
And finally, I get asked this question A LOT: What is like to be a twin? I wish I could answer that. I usually say it is a lot of fun, because, let's be honest, it is a lot of fun. We get to laugh when people o the double take. We get a bit irritated when people ask the stupid question, but we know is all in good fun. And more important: we do share a unique bond that I don' have with my other siblings.
