What is Morning Sickness?

Often one of the most uncomfortable signs of pregnancy. Morning Sickness or to be politically correct "Nausea and Vomiting during Pregnancy" happens during the first trimester and it begins aroung the 6th week mark all the way to the third month of being pregnant.

Morning Sickenss is experienced by more than half of all pregnant women and it is usually worst during the morning. But dont worry, the nauseated feeling is not always accompanied by vomiting. Although the condition gradually eases up as the day goes by, it can and does happen anytime and it really last the whole day.

Causes of Morning Sickness

Nobody has really substanciated the causes of nausea, almost of the medical experts agree that it is a combination of physical and hormonal events that occur during the first trimester of your pregnancy. Some possible causes:

1. Estrogen and Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG)- Although no one knows why, but the rapid increase of these 2 hormones during the early stages of pregnancy are highly suspected in contributing to nausea.

2.Increase in Progesterone Levels- This hormone relaxes the muscles in the uterus, preventing early childbirth, but then it also relaxes the stomach and intestines, which in turn leads to excess stomach acids.

3. An enhanced sense of Smell - it is not too uncommon for pregnant women to have enhanced sense of smell. Atributed to high levels of estrogen, this increased sensitivity to odors has a tendency to trigger the gag reflex.

Some Remedies to combat Morning Sickness

1. Eat small meals often-  Eat small but nutritious meals and snacks throughout the day so that your stomach is never empty. Avoiding fatty foods (which is harder to digest) also helps in keeping down the nausea.

2. Drink lots of fluids- Drinking a lot fluids mostly between meals helps settle down your tummy. But don't drink too much at one time so that your stomach does not feel full, as this has a tendency to make you less hungry for food. A good way to prevent this is to sip fluids frequently throughout the day.

3. Take your medication with food- try taking your vitamins and medication with food or just before turning in at night. You may also want to request your doctor for medicines that contain less or no iron as this mineral can be really hard on your stomach.

4.Sniff lemons or ginger, drink lemonade, or eat watermelon- this has been proven to be effective in relieving nausea and settling your stomach.
