Humans are hazardess to the health of all living creatures

Mother Earth is pissed. Let’s face it. If you were in her shoes, you’d be pretty upset with the way things are going here on Planet Earth. She’s got plenty of reasons to blow back, and here are some of them:

She’s got too many kids!—Yes, it is possible for a mother to have too many kids. Considering the world’s population, now at 6.5 million, has doubled in the last 61 years, we can expect to have 13 billion people by 2067 if current rates continue.

Now I know this fact remains an inconvenient truth to lots of people who think we should just let nature take its course. I know there are people who think the more kids the better, forget birth control, abortion is a sin, God provides, all life is precious (until, I might add, we need to step up to the plate and provide health care for the living!). But, life get’s tricky when a mother has trouble feeding her kids, and if children persist in poisoning the family garden, digging things up that should stay put, cutting down the cherry trees (so to speak), it makes it all the more problematic for the Mother to keep putting food on the table. Consider the problem of hunger just in America, where one in eight Americans are faced with food insecurity—simply not knowing where their next meal is coming from.

We all know children can be picky eaters, and usually don’t want to eat what’s good for them, and Mother Earth’s children are no exception. They are recalcitrant kids who love eating lots of junk while sitting in front of the television forgoing any attempt to exercise or play outside. Then when they get tummy aches and become obese, they immediately expect some quick fix (here come the Rolaids and acid reflex medication and stomach stapling), and then go back to eating their genenetically engineered Cheetos!

“It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.” - Krishnamurti

She’s sick of getting dumped on!—Even a mother can only take so much abuse. It’s true mothers try to be understanding when their children behave badly. When kids cut flowers from the neighbor’s gardens or feed the dog under the table, a mother may even find these antics charming. But when the kids start throwing garbage in her face, slapping her around, or putting poison in her smoothies, she has to get rough. When kids are armed and dangerous, it’s time for some tough love.

Because the U.S. produces 220 million tons of garbage each year (according to the Environmental Protection agency), or the equivalent of burying more than 82,000 football fields six feet deep in compacted garbage, Mother Earth is overwhelmed. There are no statistics readily available for the entire planet, but considering the U.S. makes up about 4% of the world's population, this is a LOT of garbage. Some estimate the entire planet's yearly production of garbage to be 4 to 5 BILLION tons. Most of our garbage, including toxic waste, is buried in landfills, and Mother Earth is fed up! She is also getting deathly ill from the poisons leaching from landfills and poisoning her groundwater, streams, lakes, and natural wells. There is no limit to her children’s toxic assaults—the air, the forests, the plains, the oceans, the lakes, the rivers, and the farmland have all been depleted, poisoned, and treated as expendable. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, hog, chicken, and cattle waste has polluted 35,000 miles of rivers in 22 states and contaminated groundwater in 17 states.

Her Kids don’t get along!—Mother Earth’s kids are always fighting and killing each other. No mother likes to see her kids blowing each other up, maiming each other over whether or not they believe in the same tooth fairy or who gets the most Cocoa Puffs at breakfast! A bit of arguing here and there is acceptable and even expected, but mass murder and threatening to blow up the world is a call to arms. You can almost hear her cry, “Can’t we all just get along?” There is not a single place on the planet inhabited by people, where people aren’t killing, raping, or harming one another. This is hard on the Mother who seeks to maintain the necessary balance to sustain all life. Typically mothers teach their kids to share, be considerate of others, have compassion for the less fortunate, and to be kind to animals. Mother Earth’s kids insist on breaking all of these rules:

  • Sharing – This planet has lots of overpaid executives in a greedy financial industry filled with Ponzi-scheme artists. The U.S. has a struggling middle class and a growing number of working poor who work long hours in multiple jobs for pathetic wages. The planet as a whole is plagued with poverty and social injustice.
  • Compassion – Many of Mother Earth’s children lack compassion. “Compassion is not sentiment but is making justice and doing works of mercy. Compassion is not a moral commandment but a flow and overflow of the fullest human and divine energies.” - Matthew Fox
  • Kindness to animals – Many animals on the planet have already gone extinct due to climate change and the impact of humans on the environment— it is estimated that in 100 yrs. more than half the animals will be extinct; animal cruelty exists on all levels worldwide from factory farming to inhumane treatment of pets.

Saving the world—the Mother needs our help!

“The whole purpose of religion is to facilitate love and compassion, patience, tolerance, humility, forgiveness.” - Dalai Lama

It’s one thing for kids to make mistakes, and finally admit their wrong doings and try to make amends, but denial is extremely aggravating to the Mother:

  • Stop denying global warming!
  • Stop denying we continue to poison our environment.
  • Stop denying our impact on climate change.

Make Art not war!

When the Mother gets really stressed, she tends to react with things like hurricanes, tsunamis, and other natural disasters. This is not because she’s vindictive, but it’s actually because nature, following the laws of science, reacts to climate change in predicable ways. The Mother doesn’t have a problem with science, and she actually wants her kids to go to school, do their homework, and get a good education so they can learn reading, writing, science, math, and art. Otherwise, her children remain ignorant fools running around like a bunch of “birthers” and “tea baggers” or climate change deniers. After all, we have been warned to stop cutting down the rainforests for decades, but greedy children, who want their cake and want to eat it too, have been denying climate change and the warnings of the scientific community, claiming the jury is out on this one. No, the jury is way in on this one! Global warming is real.

Saving the planet

Mother Earth is relieved some of her children are working tirelessly on her behalf. For example, a new generation of philanthropists, called philanthrocapitalists, are billionaires who are reshaping the way they give. Largely trained in the corporate world, these “social investors” are using big-business-style strategies and expecting results and accountability to match. Bill Gates, the world's richest man, is leading the way: he has promised his entire fortune to finding a cure for the diseases that kill millions of children in the poorest countries in the world. Of course, there are millions of people doing great work to help the Mother save the world. If you’ve ever watched CNN’s Heroes, you’ll see some amazing individuals who are healing the world in powerful ways.

And, of course, we can all do a few things now and then to make Mother Earth happy:

  • Save a whale or two!
  • Recycle
  • Buy local
  • Conserve
  • Hug a tree
  • Plant trees
  • Flash a peace sign now and then
  • Pay it forward
  • Donate time and money to a cause to help the planet
  • Use non-toxic cleaning products
  • Buy green products whenever possible
  • Buy organic food
  • Plant a tree
  • Have a garden
  • Go Green
  • Feed birds
  • Put out a bird house or two
  • Be nice to animals
  • Smile more
  • Help your friend’s once in while
  • Make art, not war

Be a vegetarian or Eat less meat – just by passing up one hamburger, you will save as much water as you save by taking 40 showers with a low-flow nozzle. "

Great hub! We all were born on a spaceship called planet Earth! Let's build the Spaceship Peace (without politicians, because they never act)!!!!...and write more hubs about these problems

We can write and write, but when so many of us are worried about making it through the day, we have no energy left for the big picture. It is a fact that until a persons immediate needs are fulfilled -- shelter, food on a continuing basis, a trusted source of clean water, a sense of survival for our children -- we cannot and will not deal with universal woes. So we're stuck in yet another catch 22 -- too many of us are in a life position of hand to mouth existence that takes everything we have, with nothing left over to turn our thoughts to those bigger problems that have caused our situation in the first place. And until we get a critical mass of humanity working towards those goals, progress will not happen. Another vicous circle.

Love your article and yes, we should all do what we can particularly with the three R's -- reduce, reuse, recycle. But real change? -- won't happen without real change.

great job, kartika! keep up the pontificating, as some would have us believe. it is truly amazing that with all the problems that humans have created and continue to create, so few are willing to pull their heads out of the sand.

this is an exceptional hub.

Thanks, again, to kartika for this hub, and thanks to Immartin and blue dog for your comment, yes, we need real change before it is too late, perhaps it is already too late ...

Hey Everyone! Thanks for your great comments! There is definitely a lot to say about the topic, and lmmartin, you are so right about how survival issue are the main focus for many of us, and I agree until basic needs are met, most of us do not have the time and energy it takes to become activists. I think that works very well for the powerful and rich who run the show - the less time people have to think and act, the more the power players can push forward toxic agendas that don't support quality of life for us all. Also, why bother with education, when a dumbed down society is more easily manipulated? Kartika

Hi,

Very disturbing to read what we have done to the mother earth. I really appreciate the specific style you have chosen (treating earth to be the mother and all of us as her children) to write this article. The writing flow comes naturally to you and it carries a certain power with it.

Thumbs up!

Hi C.V. - always nice hearing from you! I think we share similar views on the earth as mother. Amma has talked a lot abut this topic, as you know! Thanks for your comments, Kartika

I suggest you read Paul Erlich. He predicted imminent massive problems due to overpopulation, but unfortunately did it 30 years ago. Poor Paul has made a living out of telling us we're all going to die.

Very nice metaphor kartika.

It really comes down to simple common sense, which, unfortunately, seems to be in short supply.

If you've never heard of it, check out the Gaia Hypothesis. It makes eminently good sense.

I agree with you - Mother Nature must really be cheesed off.

I'm just so glad you gave us tips on how to make her happy. Not sure what "Hug a Tree" means. Does it literally mean Hug a Tree - I Just don't want people giving me funny looks in the Park. :)

Thanks for visiting! CWB - I believe in Gaia as in the earth is a living, breathing being and think of earth as the Mother both metaphorically and literally! Thanks for these great links!

Lady_E - so nice to hear from you! Hug a tree is a saying used here in the U.S. as in--they are just a bunch of "tree huggers" - a name for environmentalists! I think it is probably good to actually hug trees, but I haven't yet - okay, maybe once or twice! lol!
