I remember my wedding day vividly. I walked down the isle on my Dad’s arm in a stunning princess dress, long veil, tiara and crystal beads glistening in the sunlight. One of the few occasions that my Dad has ever worn a tuxedo and very handsome he did look! Both the Mother of the Bride and the Mother of the Groom dresses looked sensational accentuated with elegant hats. Six bridesmaids and one lovely little flower girl all dressed in royal blue taffeta halter neck gowns flowing down to their toes and six groomsmen all in tuxedos. The Mother of the Bride dressed in blues and greens and the Mother of the Groom dressed in a pale blue skirt and jacket suit.

I remember too the run up to the Big Day… Both the Mother of the Bride and the Mother of the Groom in stress mode over what they should wear and also what their traditional duties were. The Mother of the Bride, my Mum chose for herself a beautiful flowing dress and then had her dressmaker adjust it to make it a perfect fit.

The Mother of the Groom really struggled to come up with the perfect ensemble and grumbled bitterly that every time she typed in a search for Mother of the Groom dresses all that was returned was Mother of the Bride dresses! She couldn’t seem to get her head around the fact that they were dresses all the same! She wanted a site which specifically stated “Mother of the Groom dresses”! So I decided to give her a hand in finding the perfect Mother of the Groom dress and she also liked my suggestions for a Mother of the Groom T-shirt, apron and tote bag which made public the fact that she was the proud Mother of the Groom. The pale blue skirt and jacket suit with matching hat she chose certainly did her son proud and to be honest she actually looked like a celebrity Mum that day.

My Mother-in-law to be was also especially pleased one day when she called me up and informed me that finally she had found the perfect accoutrement for the Mother of the Groom and that was “Mother of the Groom” by Sharon Naylor. A book written especially for Mothers of the Groom covering everything you can think of and many details that might never have crossed your mind. In my Mother-in-laws own words: “It was a fantastic read. A must have for every Mother of the Groom. I couldn’t have gotten by without it!”

One of the big questions many Mums battle with when searching for their Mother of the Bride and Mother of the Groom dresses is “What color should I wear?” Both the Mums at my wedding chose variations of blue to go with the Royal blue bridesmaid dresses even though I said they could wear whatever color they wished. One of the advantages to this is that all the group wedding photos blended fabulously just like something off an artists palette. It is very important to wear a color that makes you feel confident and comfortable, but it is also an added bonus to find something that does not clash with the theme colors.
