MotoGP: the characteristics of the Ducati Desmosedici GP9
63This year, Ducati has decided to revolutionize his concept of MotoGP, deploying the Desmosedici GP9. This motorbike hides some secrets, which are the evolution of other Ducati GP, in particular, the GP9 has a monocoque composite of carbon fiber. This solution is due to many factors, how to obtain maximum efficiency between stiffness and weight of the body and create a bike with elements that carry out specific functions. It was chosen the carbon fiber to realize the pieceof the desired shape without the enormous costs of equipment and be able to achieve different bending and torsional stiffness simply by changing the type, number and orientation of the skins of carbon using the same equipment.
This solution is defined as a continuation of the bike itself, GP3 (first Desmosedici which began in 2003) for example was particularly characteristic of possessing the swingarm pivot and the rear suspension arm connected to the engine only without any connection with the chassis front. The GP7, besides the solution adopted by the GP3, saw the front and rear chassis disjoint between them and therefore the engine had the task of being the central part of the frame and the bike itself, unlike the GP3 that saw a single frame together.
In particular, the front frame of the GP7 was task connecting the motor to pivot steering while the rear frame connected the engine to the seat and footrest, making it more spacious and less light. The GP9 sees the front frame to take a form to perform the function of connecting the motor to pivot steering and air-box. The monocoque allows then to efficiently implement the two functions.
The engine of Ducati always follows the guideline of the Desmosedici project, and with a chassis such as the engineers have achieved a goal in cycling where each element performs a specific function and to maximize the desired stiffness with the lowest weight possible for the efficiency. GP9 on track sees improved accuracy and stability when braking and entering the curve, but a more detailed analysis can be done after the first few races, which will allow us to assess whether the choice made by the technicians Ducati is winning or not and if this detect motorbike is the best of the lot MotoGP.
