The Shoei Company is well-known for creating technologically sophisticated helmets for motorcycle riders. Although this manufacturing and distributing company is based in Japan, its helmets compete against other products from all over the world in a high-end market. Shoei helmets have many impressive qualities: They are attractive, adaptable, protective, and can last through years of wear. The Shoei Company has also recently manufactured the Hornet-DS. Riders who use this versatile helmet can customize it for both on-road and off-road riding.

Shoei helmets are remarkable for their design. To start, they are practical and dependable, and they keep their riders' heads safe and well-ventilated. Yet, what sets Shoei products apart from ordinary helmets is their stunning beauty. One of the best examples of this is the Hornet-DS. With its sleekness and aerodynamic function, it is an ideal marriage of aesthetics and industrial design. If you examine the Hornet-DS, you may be tempted to believe that it was created more for stylishness instead of practicality. Its unique look protrudes from the front and has a tapering nose-piece, and it may at first seem similar to a “Star Wars” prop. However, there is a scientific reason behind this Shoei helmet's design. First, its appearance actually increases head protection; and secondly, a rider's face and head will be kept comfortably cool and dry due to maximization of airflow.

Along with their good looks, these helmets are also known for their incredible toughness. Their predecessors were originally built for construction workers in Japan, but the first Shoei helmet made for motorcyclists debuted in 1960. This helmet fulfilled the Japanese official standards for durability, and not surprisingly, all of the following versions of Shoei protective gear were produced with safety and strength as their top priorities. Also, many of the company's helmets meet the M2005 rating level of the Snell Memorial Foundation. Since the Snell Memorial Foundation's protective standards have sometimes been criticized for being too strict, it is safe to assume that Snell M2005-compliant Shoei headgear can be ranked among the best and safest motorcyclist helmets in the world. In addition, it must be stated that the first use of Kevlar and carbon fiber technology appeared in the GRV, a Shoei helmet.

Throughout the years, different editions of the Shoei helmet have received many safety and industrial design accolades. In 1965, the Honda Motor Company helped increase Shoei product sales by linking its helmets to its motorcycle line.

The Shoei Company is recognized throughout the world, and its Shoei helmets are hugely popular in the United States. Despite its great international reputation and renown, however, one may be surprised to learn that Shoei's worldwide workforce only consists of 500 employees. While it is true that the Shoei Company can cut costs by outsourcing its manufacturing work outside of Japan, the company takes much pride in knowing that every Shoei helmet is created in its high-tech facility located in Iwate, Japan. The Shoei Company is proud of the excellence of its products, and it will strive to continue pleasing motorcycle lovers all over the world.

A friend of mine had his life saved by a helment when he dropped his bike on a curve.. The helmet's rivets were ground off by the pavement. If he hadn't been wearing a helmet, he would be dead. Any person who chooses not to wear a helmet is an idiot.

The article was very interesting. I never knew that there could have so many qualities for a head gear. The article really intrigue me and actually made me feel that it was a very safe and reliable product. Although I don’t own a bike I would recommend the helmet to anyone trying to find a suitable head gear to wear with their motorcycle.

It's great to know that this product is Snell-M2005 compliant and it's nice to know that they are the first ones to use Kevlar and fiber technology in their helmelts. Also the tapering nose-piece gotta help with ventillation. I guess the only thing is to try it on and find out if there's a warrenty on it and for how long.

This is actually a great company! A lot of motorcyle helmets are not as safe as people think they are but to have a company like this to really make them safe and stylish is Amazing! I would love to have one, so I am going to check them out.

I would like to say , that reffering to some general information the helmets are made

according to the egg shell principle , where the helmet's surface due to its disign

spreads the one point blow along the whole surface and softens it. In connection

with that I would strongly recomment to wear these helmets on every ride as a guarantee

not only for your wellfare , but also for your joy of the ride.

I never would have realized that these helmets evolved from construction worker helmets. I’ve actually been thinking about buying a Shoei helmet for a while now. My brother owns two motorcycles and I was planning to buy him a new helmet for his birthday. I’m definitely getting him one a Shoei helmet after reading this.

The SHOIE helmets are really in a class of their own.The mere fact that this company has been invoved in producing technologically sophisticated helmets gives it great credentials. These helmets are real safe and I can from my own experience say that there are few in the market which provide the same level of protection. Apart from the safety , its also exceptionally comfortable.

This really helped me decide what kind of helmet I wanted to get since I just bought a motorcycle. The Shoei Helmets are very stylish and seem very safe. I really appreciate the people who care about our safety to make these helmets. I'm definately sold on Shoei Helmets.

Great helmets - really well made and good looking. I know someone who came off his bike whilst going at around 100mph and he'd probably be a gonner now if it wasn't for his helmet. So get a good one, made my a reputable manufacturer, like Shoei. They're lightweight and comfortable too, and have excellent ventilation.

I was interested to learn about the ways that this company combines a great aesthetic look with practical functionality. I thought the comparison with Star Wars was great--I love those movies, especially the older ones, and I can definitely see the similarities between the helmets worn by the X-wing pilots and some of these ones!

Those are some good looking helmets! I mean, its a proven fact that helmets save lives, so not wearing one when you're doing 100mph would be rather stupid, eh? So...if you're going to wear them, wear them with style! One of the users has commented about the Shoei helmets being lightweight and well ventilated which I think is very importan. A couple of my friends actually avoid wearing helmits because of ventilation issues. Now I can recommend Shoei to them.

This is a topic very close to my heart, I have known quite a few people, friends and relatives too, who lost their lives or were badly injured in collisions that happened while they were on their motorcycles. Some of them were wearing helmets, some were not, but a standard motorcycle helmet did nothing to save the life of my father-in-law several years ago. I am glad that there are companies like this that are working to make better, safer helmets.

As to the location of the company, that should not be an issue to those who are really interested in these helmets. The most important thing is that they are made well and are of very high quality. There are some helmets made in the US, such as some of the "brain buckets" that are not safe, so them being made in Japan is not an issue, only that they are very durable and protective.

This is a very informative article about the Shoei helmets. While the information is interesting (i.e. the helmets were originally made for construction workers), I think the Shoei helmet's most attractive feature is that they look 'cool'. Too often, motorcycle riders do not wear helmets because they do not like the way they make them look. However, with the Shoei helmet, the rider gets a really great protective helmet with the added bonus of looking good.

Thank you for providing such great information on this helmet. My husband recenly purchased a motorcycle and bought a helmet but he has had problems with its fit and ventilation. I will show this post to him and encourage him to purchase one for himself.

Great information. I was not familiar with the Shoei company or about the standards from the Smell Memorial foundation. It is good to know that there are strict standards out there. Motorcycle owners are at such great risk when other drivers do not see them and at a even greater risk if they have an accident and are not protected by a well made helmet. It worries me greatly to see riders without helmets. Thank you for sharing this information.

I was really impressed by the motorcycle helmets Shoei is producing. Not only are they beautiful to look at but they are apparently durable -- and comfortable. I commend the company for producing such a helmet. Maybe more people will wear them as a fashion statement. I would love to see more Shoel helmet wearers in my state of Florida.

While driving in a car you have a piece of metal surrouding you keeping you safe. While flying down a highway on a rocket, you need a very good helmet. I have been into bikes for awhile and have much experience with other helmet companies. I know that these Shoei helmets hold up under extreme conditions. Don't sacrifice your life for the sake of saving some money on a cheap helmet.

Hi,

A helmet must be designed to protect the head of person wearing it in any circumstances. Shoei’s helmets certainly looks to be meeting this must have criteria. The article is a good piece of information on types of Shoei's helmets, their features and the company background. The quality of pictures and helmet are compelling. With such great features in Shoei’s helmets, I will definitely go for one.

Thanks,

Rajesh

These are some nice helmets. They don't look bulky at all like some helmets can look. I especially like the part about them being well ventilated. There is nothing worse than your head getting all sweaty during a ride!

The couple of people I know who ride motorcycles swear by the SHOEI helmet, but have never really been able to articulate to me why it is that they will only wear this type of helmet. One of them tells a story similar to one featured in a comment already here about how the helmet is very tough and saved the life of a friend who got into a motorcycle accident.

That is why I really enjoyed reading this article. It was very informative, and helpful in understanding why so many motorcycle riders are dedicated to this brand of helmet. I also enjoyed reading about the standards that motorcycle helmet manufacturer's have to meet. Thanks for this.

My husband rides, and I am always on the hunt for good gift ideas for him. I am going to check out the Shoei helmets right now! His helmet is rather old, and i always fear for his safety. Plus it never hurts to have a nice, stylish helmet. Thanks so much!!

Bottom line the Shoei helmet along with Arai can't be beat. There is not a huge difference in weight and looks of helmets which is where a lot of people go wrong. Cheaper helmets may be light and well ventilated and seem just as good as a shoei at first glance but are loud and cause headshake because the vents just let air in and don't protect much if in a fall. Shoei is head and shoulders above other helmets because they are lightweight, the vents let air in and negative back pressure allows it to escape without being noisy, and when impacted it absorbs and disperses the blow around the helmet instead of into the riders head. Most of these things you can't see the difference between the two without riding or god forbid crashing but these helmets are worth their weight in gold.

I'm also a little confused as to why these helmets being made in Japan would be a negative thing. Looking at cars, motorcycles, and electronics, being made in Japan means superior reliability, quality and function with no corners cut to save pennies.
