Motorcycles for all their goodness are more prone to being involved in accidents than other vehicles like cars or trucks, owing to their inherent instability and lack of protective equipment. Therefore the most important thing that a motorcyclist needs is a protective gear.

Motorcycle protective gear available today supplements full body protection with ease. In fact, modern technology and advanced engineering has made it possible for motorcyclists to escape many life threatening situations that too, without a scratch.

Protective gear is an integral part of the life of a bike rider. General motorcycle protective gear includes helmets for head protection, jackets for upper body protection, pants for lower body protection, gloves for hands and boots for protection of feet from skidding with road while in accident or otherwise.

It is mandatory by law in many countries to wear protective clothing while motorcycling. Motorcycle jackets are the most common protective gear worn by motorcyclists; they not only protect their user from accidental injury; these suave looking stylish jackets also give a great visual appeal. Generally made from leather, nylon or Kevlar, these jackets provide excellent protection from impacts and skids from the road.

Motorcycle jackets are able to provide good protection because of the strength of the material used; the materials used to build motorcycle jackets are thick, heavy and robust by nature. Motorcycle jackets have special padding, generally called ‘CE rating armor', for critical areas like elbow, spine and shoulder regions for better protection against accident related injuries. In 1946, Ross Langlitz, of Portland, invented the popular classic American motorcycle style jacket that had epaulets and a diagonal zipper. This jacket became highly popular with the movie ‘The Wild One' when it was worn by Marlon Brando.

These jackets apart from providing protection in case of accidents and injuries offer excellent cover from unfavorable weather conditions. A motorcycle rider may have to face a variety of harsh weather conditions from rain to hailstorm and these jackets can provide extensive protection in such scenarios.

There are many choices available in the market for motorcycle jackets. Stores are filled with these jackets and many offer high discounts on high-quality leather and textile motorcycle jackets. Motorcycle riders have a number of brands to choose from; for example, genuine branded gear provides features such as ‘Hypertex'- a material that is used essentially for abrasion prevention', ‘cuff vent system'- for providing flow of air in the body while wearing jackets; ‘Kwik- Dry'- this helps in making the jacket completely water proof and also prevents possible staining or shrinking of the jacket'.

Textile Motorcycle jackets have increasingly gained popularity in the last few years. Compared to heavy and non aired leather jackets, these light weight textile jackets made from textile based material are manageable as well as provide all the qualities that are given by other materials. Although these jackets are considered to be less safe because of their light weight and thin nature, the advanced remodeled textile used in these jackets proves to be really good alternative. Although these jackets are used as motorcycle protective gear, they are also very eligible candidate for casual wear. Textile Motorcycle jackets provide protection and safety which proves to be an interesting alternative because of their cheaper cost and minimum requirement for maintenance.

Of course don't forget to check into motorcycle helmets and other safety gear. And follow the driving laws. Check with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles for your state or other locale.
