The other kind of awning does not have these supporting arms because it is able to bear the weight of the awning by itself. Generally speaking, awnings that have arms are less expensive than awnings that do not - but you do run the risk of ruining your views with a support arm. 3. Decide if you can handle the cost of going motorized - Motorized awnings are anything but cheap. They can run you hundreds of dollars to buy and to install in your house, that is unless you go with DIY installation - then you just have to pay the cost for the awning itself. But that still isn't that cheap. You can still go retractable without having a motorized awning. You will just need to use a hand crank to move it into place when you want it hanging out over your patio.
   
4. Talk with your spouse - you absolutely have to make sure that you and your spouse are on the same page when it comes to getting your retractable awning. You don't want to take on a greater financial burden than both of you are willing and able to take on. That will just make your marriage more miserable than it really needs to be and nobody wants to do something like that. Try and set up a meeting with your spouse about what they want in your outdoor space and try to come to some sort of agreement on what will work best for your patio and your motorized retractable awning.
