A motorized wheelchair, or power chair, should come equipped with a seat belt, but if it doesn't, the user should install one. You should never use a motorized wheelchair outdoors unless you're wearing the seatbelt; and those motorized wheelchairs without seat belts should have them installed; wheelie bars should also be added to motorized wheelchairs without them.

The surprising speed which a motorized wheelchair can generate demands that you exercise caution while it is in motion; foot-support straps will ensure that your feet remain secured to the pedals, and are in no danger of being caught under the chair when you are moving at a good clip. And be sure to you don't extend your arms and legs while you're traveling.

The foot pedals of a motorized wheelchair may stick when the vehicle is making short severe turns, and sudden stops may also damage the chair. You can prevent its automatic brakes from unexpectedly engaging by using the joystick control when you need to move fast.

Going Motorized With Medicare

If you're eligible for Medicare coverage, you may also be eligible for a motorized wheelchair at no cost, provided you meet certain qualifications. You'll have to need assistance in performing one or more of the daily activities listed by Medicare. These include the abilities to groom, bathe, and dress yourself; use the bathroom, and eat in the normal dining area of your home instead of while being confined to bed.

You'll also have to show that a walker, cane, or manually-operated wheelchair is not adequate to meet your mobility needs. And if you meet all the qualifications, you'll be required to consult either a physician to wheelchair manufacturer to begin the process of having your motorized wheelchair evaluation approved.

Responsible Motoring

While having a motorized wheelchair may make your feel independent again, you remain at risk whenever you are out in high-traffic areas. Always operate your wheelchair with safety as your first priority, but especially if you have only recently begun to use it and are not familiar with its operation.

If your route takes you across any yielding surfaces like grass or dirt, find the firmest terrain you can so that your wheelchair's tires do not being to sink. You may have to pass on outdoor excursions during snowy weather, because you motorized wheelchair will be difficult, if not impossible, to manage on ice. If you have to go out under wintry conditions, bring someone along to assist you.

And the velocity of your motorized wheelchair makes it essential that you exercise caution when you are operating it around the very young or the very old. Small children pose an additional danger; they may confuse they joystick for one on a video game and by pulling on it move your motorized vehicle in their direction.
