Mountain biking basics are important bits of information to have before you get on the trails for the first time.

Mountain biking, while it isn't exactly a new sport, is a growing sport among men and women of all ages. The bikes are sturdier than road and race bikes and allow for cycling over rugged terrain. Mountain bike trails tend to be narrow passes through natural environments and many bikers consider themselves to be environmentalists as well.

It is, in fact, and environmentally friendly sport. Trails are engineered so as to keep the area as natural as possible. The trail itself might be so narrow that one could not navigate it on a horse. During times of heavy rains the trails may be closed to keep bikers from forming ruts in the muddy ground and changing the way that water runs off the area.  In contrast to road bicycling, mountain bikers will find a new challenge every time they ride.  The trails will change from moment to moment and day to day depending on weather, atmospheric conditions, and other things.  There is a sense of adventure and an arenalin rush that most mountain bikers experience that keeps them coming back for more.

Like most sports it can be dangerous if the proper protective gear isn't worn and safety precautions aren't made. So if you are interested in the sport, what do you need to know?

Getting Started

Getting started with moutain biking is not all that difficult.  You will want to do some research and talk to other mountain bikers before you choose a bike.

Road bikes are made for speed and not the harsh conditions that a mountain bike will be subjected to. The frame of a road bike is light to allow for high speeds.  These light frames would quickly twist under mountain biking conditions.   It is important that you get a mountain bike, a good one that will hold up to climbs, gravel, mud, and jumps.

The local bike shop, if you have one, is a great place to start.  They will be knowlegable about the different types of bikes and supplies, as well as understanding the local trail conditions and any special needs that they entail.

  • Mountain bike-fitted to your size, and durable enough for your local trail conditions.
  • Helmet- this is a must.  It is easy to have a serious fall on the trails.  The helmet could save your life.
  • Biking gloves- these not only protect your hands from blisters formed by gripping the bike, they will protect your hands during a fall.
  • Eye protection-if your helmet does not have a visor then consider protective eye covering.  Getting slapped in the eyes with low hanging twigs, or having a kamakaze bug attack your eye is not fun.
  • Some bikers also use specially formed seats for comfort and protection of sensitive areas.

Work closely with your bike shop to have your bike custom fit to you.  This is especially important in mountain biking because you need more control than you do with road biking.

Good tips for the mountain biking but I have also heard and read at a number of places that too much of biking effects the sperm production in male. One must take care of that too. I know this suggestion is out of context but just thought to mention the same.
