Mourning Doves deedsphotos
63Mourning doves are among the most beautiful birds that come to our backyard feeder in Michigan. Their colors are iridescent and their plaintive cooo-cooo-coo is the source of their name.
Doves feed peacefully together with sparrows, cardinals, and most other birds at our feeder except for grackles and blue jays who chase the other birds away when feeding. Doves are seed and grain eaters and generally feed on or close to the ground. They are found throughout the continental United States, southern Canada as well as central and South America. They nest in trees and lay two small white eggs.
Rumor has it that Dick Cheney is an avid dove hunter. He uses the same shock and awe technique, developed by Rumsfeld in Iraq, which he used so successfully on his recent quail hunting expedition in Texas. Fortunately, doves are even harder to hit with a shotgun than quail. He gets mostly lawyers.

Thanks to Paul & Jorge.
Wonderful photos, and informative, too!
I enjoyed your photos very much... and your Cheney humor! Bet I can guess your politics correctly<grin>. Have fun sailing and birdwatching!
I ADORE Mourning Doves and plan to hatch and raise a pair when I retire. These photos did my heart good. I've loved & studied these birds since I was a child. I've chosen names for the first two I get (Once, as in the Spanish word for eleven, and Morocco). I also have names picked out for the M. doves I want to acquire after that. Post more photos ANYTIME! Thank you so very much.
I'm glad you enjoyed them. They are my favorite bird, too.
These pictures remind me of the gentle coo they produce in my backyard. And, the summers at my grandmothers sitting on the porch watching them. Beautiful birds! Thank you for the great memories!
Love your bird photos very nice. We have mourning doves but they never get on our feeder they just eat off the ground.
I found a very young mourning dove this am. Fell out of the nest. Should I try and return it to the nest or keep it with me and try and raise it?
Not sure. I'm not an expert. Maybe somebody else might know.
