Movie Night Review III
61Movie night review three takes us on a journey into the world of romantic comedy, crive and science fiction adventure. The movies I selected are all recent releases and are now available for rental and purchase. I am also including a review of an older movie that I purchased at a great deal for your enjoyment.
Once a month I try to rent at least 3 or 4 recently released movies and view them. In watching the films I have learned to enjoy the movie while viewing it with a critical eye. The critical eye is so that I can then come here to HubPages and give you the reader an overview of these films. I hope you enjoy them and it helps you make a decision on whether to see these movies or not.

The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3
Price: $9.95
List Price: $28.96 |
The Taking of Pelham 123
Rated: R
Director: Tony Scott
Starring: John Travolta and Denzel Washington
Genre: Crime
Denzel Washington plays a MTA employee under investigation for taking a bribe who recieves the call from the hijacker of Pelham 123. John Travolta plays the ruthless hijacker of the train.
The action starts almost immediately as you follow both Denzel and Travolta as the course of their day starts and things fall into place. Denzel is under pressure to keep the truth of what he did hidden and keep his job. Travolta is seen as a man on a mission.
Travolta reverts back to his days of Vinnie Barbarino using a Brooklyn accent that is not quite as charming as in his days as one of the Sweat Hogs.
The language is hard core as is the violence. There were a few light moments as Denzel attempts to negotiate with Travolta and then with his wife. Favorite quote is when he is talking to his wife and she says "We need milk, I want you to bring home a gallon of milk."

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
Price: $7.25
List Price: $29.98 |
G I Joe: The Rise of Cobra
Rated: PG-13
Director: Stephen Sommers
Starring: Channing Tatum and Dennis Quaid
Genre: Sci-Fi Action Adventure
Ok, I have to be honest here, this is not my type of movie but growing up with neighbors who brought G I Joe action figures to play with my Barbie's well I just had to check this one out.
The movie had me spellbound from the first insurgence of action to the last moments. The action just simply never stops. From the deserts of Egypt to the Eiffel Tower in Paris and all parts of the world you are taken on a non-stop journey to save humanity.
Channing Tatum plays Duke and is new to me as an actor. I found him for the most part believable as the dedicated soldier on a mission. When that mission is compromised by and old flame, you can see the need to protect but the desire not to harm combating his choice to serve his country.
Dennis Quaid is the commander of the elite force that Channing joins up with to save the world from a disasterous foe. As always, he plays this role well.

The Ugly Truth (Widescreen Edition)
Price: $14.23
List Price: $28.96 |
The Ugly Truth
Rated: R
Director: Robert Luketic
Starring: Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler
Genre: Romantic Comedy
This film is rated R for sexual content and language but it is a truly engaging look at how men and women percieve each other in the dating world.
Heigl plays a TV producer who is looking for the right man. She has a checklist and a very thurough assistant who prints off her dates stats for her. The station is having problems and her boss goes behind her back to hire a man who is grittier than the sand on your butt when you swim in the ocean.
Butler rubs Heigl all the wrong way, but as luck would have it he helps her get her man. Only is the young handsome doctor that meets all the points on her checklist really what she wants? You'll have to check it out to see.
My rating: 4 stars and 5 licks for yummy man candy.

Runaway Bride (Widescreen Edition)
Price: $2.01
List Price: $9.98 |
The Runaway Bride
Rated: PG
Director: Garry Marshall
Starring: Julia Roberts and Richard Gere
Genre: Romantic Comedy
This is another one of those Julia Roberts movies that you can watch time and time again and never get tired of it. In looking through the bargain bin at my rental store, I came across this at a rock bottom price and couldn't pass up the deal to add it to my collection.
Julia plays the bride that runs away from every wedding and fiance she finds herself attached to and Gere is the columnist who sets out to find out what is behind all the running.
In this classic tale of prince meets princess, the two again create a magical on screen chemistry that is hard to beat.
It is an oldie but still a goodie.
My rating: 4 stars

I've been putting off watching G I Joe: The Rise of Cobra. You were a lot nicer to them than a lot of other reviewers I've read.
Maybe I will give it a shot...
