'to a child's ear--mother means magic in any language'--A. Benedict
Emily (Kyra Sedgeick) always wanted parents. Not that she did not have parents--she did. But Marty (Kevin Bacon) and Sybil (Marisa Tomei) thought that the love between themselves--was more important than to waste it on Emily, who was more of a nuisance to them than anything else.
So Emily had to rely upon surrogate parenting from their next door neighbor, Mrs. Harker (Sandra Bullock). Mrs. Harker always walked her kids and Emily to the bus stop--would always be there waiting for them when the bus came back after school--she also made sure her children, and Emily had lunch packed for school. Emily loved Mrs. Harker--but she was not her mother. Emily was all alone even though she had parents of her own.
Emily, a woman now vowed to have a child. She did not want to get married--because if she had a child she did not want her love to be divided between her child and a husband. She was on a mission--to get pregnant with the best possible 'contributor' as possible. After many conquest and one night stands--she became pregnant. So begins the tale of a mother's deep love for her child. Paul (Dominic Scott Kay) or Loverboy--his permanent name his mother calls him--grew up in pure love and dedication of his mother. She traveled the world with him, he always had the best home, best food--everything and anything a child could want. He never once doubted if his mother loved him--she made it a point to show him everyday.
Something was wrong. Emily had a problem with other people playing an important part in Paul's life--once a mother next door was over to welcome Emily and Paul (he was an infant then) to the neighborhood. Emily stepped out to make lemonade for her company when Paul began to cry loudly--she hurried out to find her next door neighbor holding Paul--well not just holding him--but breastfeeding him! Emily--lets just say that they were neighbors any longer. As Paul grew up--Emily became more obsessive--she was afraid to allow Loverboy playmates or meet any other mom's in the community. Her love and attention was only for Loverboy--everyone else was only a nuisance--if anything else (sound familiar?).
Loverboy is a movie to watch. Just so you know--the relationship between the two main characters is not inappropriate--I just want to make that point. This is a beautiful movie that did not get much positive press. I think that Kevin Bacon did well in the direction and adaptation of Redel's novel. Not only is Loverboy a great book to read--it is beautiful movie to watch. It is oftentimes good to see a great relationship between a mother and her child--it is also good to see what happens when that relationship has its difficulties.

Good review, I am dying to see this movie. I'll put it in my Netflix queue. I love Kyra Sedgewick. The whole cast looks great. I watched the video, but couldn't hear it...something wrong with the audio on my computer.
Dohn--I can agree with you, I felt that way at first. Then I went ahead to watch this film because I admire Kevin Bacon & his wife movies and I was like, ah what the heck! I am glad I did watch it--although I wished he developed the characters more--overall a very emotional movie.
alek--you can also see some of these recommendations on Hulu. I can let you know when some of them are on Hulu. I will tag the link in a 'tweet'! I hope the sound on your computer check out ok soon--thanks for commenting =D
Love the cast but I don't like movies when the kids are in pain. Not sure its for me even with your positive review...

I do like the story line, NM! I'm not totally enamored with the storyline as I can see where this story is going. However, I do like the cast for this movie and that alone is worth having a look.
By the way, have you seen, "The Squid and the Whale?" No, it's not a monster movie, in spite of its title, rather, it's pure drama. The movie was directed by Noah Baumbach and was produced with the help of Wes Anderson. Check it out if you got 90 minutes or so :D You won't regret it.
