How long could you hold a grudge?
Get ready for a furious ride that is mentally and emotionally wrought with psychological revenge--also a love tale. When I first heard of the movie Oldboy (2003) I thought that it was going to be another one of those 'dark' revenge tales that sort of loses it's meaning for revenge towards the middle--fortunately, I was wrong, big time! Oldboy (2003) is an action packed 'education' from Korea--this movie takes you back to the 'old school style' of revenge. With the fierceness that only director Chan-wook Park can deliver.
Now, can you keep a secret? Really? Well the foundation of this movie was based Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) seeing something out of the ordinary one day at school and making the mistake of telling what he saw! Yep, that's right, spreading gossip is what caused Dae-Su's misfortune. (Dae-su was imprisoned for 15 years of his life) then released, given a wallet with money, a cell phone with a message: 5 days to find out who locked him up and why! He was not alone in this quest, he meets the beautiful Mi-do (actress Kang Hye-jeong) and they both are away on a whirlwind of action, intrigue and suspense (oh I forgot to mention, 'love' eh-hem).
Dae-su's pursuit for information cause him to have flashbacks about his past, which only fuels his reasons for revenge--also I would like to add that the butt kicking scenes are just wicked awesome to watch but it is not only that--it is the psychological aspect of this film which you will enjoy unraveling along with Dae-su. This is the keen accomplishment of director Chan-wook Park--simply masterful.
There is so much more I can tell you about Oldboy--but that would spoil the challenge of figuring the plot for yourself. Be patient. Enjoy. Besides, don't you just hate it when someone tells you how the movie will end? So, to keep you from hating me--I leave you with this: get ready for a mind blowing experience!
Remember this tag line for the film: 15 years imprisonment--and only 5 days for vengeance!
'laugh, and the world laughs with you--weep, and you weep alone!'

That movie really freaked me out.
I like it, but it freaked me out.
Oldboy was a fantastic movie--I was also shocked at the ending--it was brilliantly worked out. I think that Oldboy was Chan-wook's best of the trilogy!
